87. Haven't been in Brandenburg since my crazy youth.
I lived in Shively, but dated some of the "Army Brats" over at fort Knox. Brandenburg road had some nice quiet places for making out.

My first car came from Muldrough, A two door canary yellow Comet. it was a fun car.

Gas was a lot cheaper then.

like, wildly oscillating prices

"Their immediate, natural gut reaction will be that they've been gypped by somebody, they've been ripped off by the oil companies, they will smell some kind of conspiracy that someone's to blame all for this. And when people feel themselves defrauded or conspired against they often over-react....simply because the unfortunate people have not been told."

39. nice to hear
in Australia (with no public transport comparable to European transport) it's at $3.75ish per gallon - in the regional areas it's over $5, it's hard to be too sympathetic to "outrageous" prices of 1-2 dollars a gallon - in the states how much does a gallon of milk cost?

42. I wish we had even a crappy rail system
the public transport system in AUstralia is as shite as the US - Europe gets it almost right.

Here, if you live outide the metro areas then there's pretty much nothing, within the metro area of Melbourne for example there has not been a single extension to the rail network since the thirties - the population increase in that time was enormous. In Melbourne if you live in a suburb west of the city and you want to travel to somewhere north of the CBD you have to go into tiown and out again as the grid is laid out like a spoke.

Often when the petrol price thing comes up people will mention the public transport situation thinking that it's comparable to Europe, it's not it'd be more comparable to the situation in California - bugger all public transport and a government committed to building yet more and more private toll roads.

In the supermarket (Stop & Shop) tonight:

Ground Round: $4.29/lb
9 apples (organic, red delicious): $3.99
1 gallon 1% milk: $3.09
1/2 gallon OJ: $3.29

For most of my years, I didn't pay attention to prices. I am now, but I really don't know if these are much higher than, say, a year ago. But they seem high to me now.

High/rising gasoline prices would hurt the chimp big time. Don't they normally rise over the summer? I am searching the web right now for gasoline price projections for this year. No luck so far.

22. Here's what the guvmint has to say about gasoline prices
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 09:11 PM by gristy
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/steo/pub/contents.html

High crude oil prices over the last 2 months pushed gasoline costs and pump prices up to $1.57 per gallon in January from $1.48 per gallon in December. First quarter 2004 national average gasoline prices are now expected to be about $1.62 per gallon for regular grade. Gasoline prices are expected to average $1.57 per gallon in 2004, a penny more than the average for 2003. A smooth transition to summer gasoline blends would be required to add confidence to those expectations. Current gasoline inventories are in the low range, reducing chances for near-term price relief.

Average of all prices posted here so far is $1.74/gallon. Though some people probably posted premium grade price, prices appear to be exceeding the gov'ts projections at this point.

83. But does that include any state or local taxes? Our posts of prices do
because we can't tell unless you read the fine print on the taxes sticker at the pump.

When all you're doing is driving by, and from the street you see $2.15/gal for unleaded, that's what you're paying before you know the breakdown between taxes & actual fuel cost.

We're both right; it depends on what the meaning of "is" is. :)

84. Ok, per this link from MSNBC detailing state/other taxes...
"Gasoline Price Mysteries Revealed," http://www.msnbc.com/news/423165.asp

California
State Excise: 18.0
Other State Taxes: 15.5
Total State Taxes: 33.5
Total Federal & State Taxes: 51.9

Added to your $1.62 gallon = $2.139/gallon.

Yup.

27. It's Only Going to Keep Going Up
Gradually, inevitably, it's only going to keep going up for a number of reasons, including refinery capacity issues, increasing demand (more and more SUVs and pickups on the road), greater competition on the global market with China and others, and gradually declining world production.

I just attended an SAE Hydrogen/Fuel Cell conference in Sacramento where unleaded was something like $1.87 a gallon and up. A BP employee attended, as well. When a presenter brought up the vast reserves of Canadian tar sands, the BP employee called it "junk" even if it was now being processes for as little as $8 a barrel. He commended that the real problem is that the world isn't running out of oil. The problem is it is running out of cheap, easily extractable sweet crude, around which the industry has been built.

What the industry is now dealing with is an increasing percentage of crude that is dirtier, deeper and harder to refine. That means only one thing, folks... increasingly expensive fuel and everything else that depends on it.
