Rail Safety Train Runs Over Rail Worker
When about 90 people boarded a train from Roanoke to Lynchburg on Wednesday to see a Norfolk Southern Railway presentation of the Operation Lifesaver program on rail safety, they weren’t told that a man had died on the tracks under those cars the night before.

On Thursday, Roanoke police reported that Loyd Patrick Martin, 63, had been run over in the Roanoke rail yard Tuesday night by the locomotive that was moving the passenger cars into place for the Wednesday educational run.

The train’s crew saw a man lying between the rails in front of the locomotive, but they were unable to stop the train before it passed over him, NS officials said.

Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said the body was sent to a medical examiner. She said it appeared Martin’s death had not occurred prior to the train’s running over him. Johnson said police didn’t know where Martin lived.

The death clearly demonstrated one of the key points that Operation Lifesaver presenters, many of them NS employees, shared later on the train: that walking on railroad property is dangerous.
