Poll question: Songs turned into TV commercials: the poll
Yesterday I asked folks which songs being turned into advertising jingles annoyed them the most. There was an astonishing 70 replies (sorry I forgot to copy the link; if you're interested, sort the Lounge by Author name and look for me around p. 18), many reminding me of atrocities I'd forgotten or informing me of ones I'd never heard about. I am purposely not including the names of companies, 'cause I don't want to help advertise these scumbags even within the context of calling them out as scumbags. The correct answer of course is All of the Above, but try to pick one, or just reply "All of the Above".
Here's a list I culled from those replies, not including the ones in the poll and a few I hadn't heard of (Sorry!) A good source of Other votes:
Blitzkrieg Bop
Pictures of You (printer)
Dear Mr. Fantasy (football)
Don't Worry, Be Happy (Republicans)
Search and Destroy (shoes)
Ring of Fire (hemorrhoids)
Anticipation (ketchup)
Mister Blue Sky (car)
Secret Agent Man (soft drink)
Imagine (German energy/waste co)
Start Me Up (Win95)
'Tis the Gift to be Simple (luxury car)
For What It's Worth

Hey, read this on the topic, reprinted from Boston Globe. Fascinating:

Kudos to Kellanved for pointing out the use of Imagine by an evil German energy/waste company. I'd put it in the poll for sheer nefariousness, but I don't think enough of us are in Germany to make it worthwhile.

The people who selected that song deserve to be beaten down with Stratocasters!

13. Oh, NT, I hope and pray you never do...
One word: :puke:

So I always add the lines that follow. I feel it is my civic duty.

The Hilfiger ads with "American Woman" completely missed the point too.

The first time I saw it I broke into laughter--I had to explain to my younger hubby the hypocrisy of it all.

3. PInk's I'm coming up (or whatever the name is)
That one drove me crazy to begin with but having to hear it every other commercial was really bad. It would stick in my head for days. I really don't like that song now.

4. I just heard a new one today--at least I'd never seen it before.

It was Gary Numan's "Cars." I don't remember what company the commercial was for.

As for the poll, I'd have to write in "All of the Above and All Others Ever Used or To Be Used in the Future in Any Advertising Medium"

6. It is for little debbie snack cakes, lotsa flava lotsa fun. The one that
bugs me the most is Fortunate Son. I don't know why.
I read Fogarty lost control of the rights in some manner and that he didn't approve the commercial.

7. Hey now
"Ring of Fire" didn't go through. The company is scum just for thinking that.

Can't wait for the Elmer's commercial w/"Now I wanna sniff some glue."
Should be out for the back to school promotion.

9. I voted Revolution
They all upset me, but that just makes me want to explode.

I realize I'm really showing my age here but I can't hear that old folkie tune "Lemon Tree" without thinking of Lemon Pledge.

10. I loathe the very idea
of adverts ever having music that I can identify from a different context.

Bunch of wankers too lazy and cheap to create original music for their adverts; they know their products are crap, and need an identifiable hook to lure in prospective customers. "Hook" being the key word and idea underlying the whole sorry process.

One of the reasons I'm glad I killed my tv.

15. LIKE A ROCK was DONATED
He claimed to be a local hometown guy. At one point the local workers asked him to help out, so he did. Are you a sellout if you want to help autoworkers stay employed?

16. I've heard the same thing.
Bob Seger was initially against the idea, but changed his mind after being asked by the auto workers to help sell more vehicles.

17. Whip it, the Swiffer (dusting) ad
This is the one I see most.

The woman doing the funky dance while dusting everywhere then at the end her friend says, "You're dusting my house again." I always wonder if her friend takes it as a personal affront that the lady keeps dusting her house. I wonder if her friend is even a good housekeeper.

Good ad though.
