Does anyone else believe they simply don't fit in the world?
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 12:26 PM by Writer
I don't.

Anyone else?

Edit: My issue is that, for me, 1 + 1 = 3.

2. I can sympathize...
Until my senior year of high school, I was the shortest/skinniest male in my class.

Still have an old yearbook somewhere that lists my career prediction as circus midget man.

70. I've never thought of being short as a problem.
I'm 5'2" and I never felt short. Actually, I kinda like short. When I was younger, I dated both tall and short men--I thought the short ones were just as sexy as the tall ones. (And I could almost look them in the eye!)

21. Too easy
http://www.bspcn.com/2008/03/13/top-10-most-depressing-quotes-from-orwells-1984/

“We are not content with negative obedience, nor even with the most abject submission. When finally you surrender to us, it must be of your own free will. We do not destroy the heretic because he resists us; so long as he resists us we never destroy him. We convert him, we capture his inner mind, we reshape him. We burn all evil and all illusion out of him; we bring him over to our side, not in appearance, but genuinely, heart and soul. We make him one of ourselves before we kill him. It is intolerable to us that an erroneous thought should exist anywhere in the world, however secret and powerless it may be. Even in the instance of death we cannot permit any deviation . . . we make the brain perfect before we blow it out.”

30. The expectation (by others) that you should is the problem.
The world is a long avenue lined with local shops, each unique and different and serving its own purpose, but too many folk want to rip them up and replace them with corporate franchises, so that every block looks the same. A Starbucks now and then isn't bad, but when that's all you're offered, the avenue gets dull. You are the neon lights on the avenue of the world. (Damn, wish I'd I have thought of that line in a bar...)

My issue is a statement that a college chemistry professor once told me: Treat every statement you hear as a question. I think he meant only in terms of science, but I apply it to everything. Sucks, too--I'd have made a great corporate ladder stooge, otherwise.

59. Stand up and look closely
at your feet? Are they touching the ground? If not it could be you're a Mark I model human living on the Mark II Earth. ;)

Seriously, I suspect most (all?) people who take to time and effort to self-reflect and examine their lives feel that from time to time. Some unfortunately feel like that a lot if not all the time.

It took me a very long time before I ever had any significant stretch of time where I felt comfortable, so I can sympathize. I think the key is that the world is only what you can perceive and understand and you have to accept that truth and the truth that the rest of the world just is what it is and therefore you only have to fit into the bit of the world you build around you.

There must be more because I still feel 'disconnected' at times but that might be a totally different problem.

Anyway, I hope you feel better.

62. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 07:23 PM by pink-o
It's taken most of us off the beaten (mainstream) path. When I was younger I assumed everyone wanted to be educated and informed (I also assumed if they weren't, then they wouldn't mind my enlightening them. Hah! Took me awhile to understand why they all hated me.) but it's come clear that most people would rather live in blissful denial or self-imposed isolation from the truth.

Those of us who don't are fer-shure marginalized, made to feel "weird" or "different". But I would rather live without the Matrix than be spoon-fed the life The System wants me to lead. Our Big Brains evolved for a reason, we didn't crawl out of the Primordial Ooze all those millenia ago to reach the 21st century and not use the hard-fought brain power our ancestors fought so hard to acquire.

Those of you who feel lonely, different, or frustrated by the fact that the rest of the world doesn't accept you, know this: Truth is always better than ignorance, education and being informed is where you get your power. Whatever pain we might feel for being shunned, it's a small price to pay for knowing what the fuck is going on!

(edited to change an ambiguous preposition!)

67. More like I was on the outside looking in
which is really the same thing expressed differently.

I use to use alcohol and other drugs to try to make myself feel like I fit. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Today I am able to have some times when I feel connected.

I think that most humans want to feel connected to this world. To be a part of and not apart from.

You aren't alone

74. I used to believe that. Now I think the only difference between
me and those who appear to feel comfortable, is an extreme (read: debilitating) sense of self-awareness. I swear the first time I saw the night sky I recognized myself to be a flea on the ass of the universe and I've never learned to feel differently.
