Inspired by Elrond Hubbard's excellent "Movie Asshole" thread, I thought it might be fun to nominate "non-human" movie assholes. My pick is; HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Let's see what other vile creatures the Lounge can come up with.

5. I wouldn't call HAL an asshole

He was programmed with conflicting instructions which turned him into a paranoid psychotic.

Case in point: The bushbaby was raised (programmed) by assholes. Does that absolve him of his assholishness?

Webster says it's a "stupid, incompetent, or detestable person."

I think asshole implies some amount of volition: willfully thoughtless or rude behavior. But that's just the way I use the word.

As far as the bushbaby example goes, it would depend on how the bushbaby acts.

The black goo creature that killed Tasha on TNG was certainly an asshole as were the aliens in Independence Day. Others such as the Horta or the Salt Vampire, less so.

If his actions were due to conditions beyond his control? Gollum may fit in that category also, as the ring certainly overwhelmed him and created a new, "distorted" creature?
