I found out recently that the new hires where I work are making a dollar an hour more than me...
As their starting wage. I make $9.45 to $9.95 an hour depending on the time of day I work ($9.95 is after midnight which I never work anymore). Minimum wage here right now is $8.00, it just went up a few months ago. So now the new hires at work are getting more money than me because the company had to up the wage to entice new people in, yet hasn't changed the wages of those of us already working there and have stayed there when most people quit after a couple of months. What kind of horseshit is that?

11. Yep, I've been there a year as of the end of this month.
There are three people, including myself, from my training class of 20 that didn't quit after two or three months. Those new hires will also be gone after a few months, save for a few.

2. Unfortunately, that seems to happen alot
I worked at a biotech a couple of years ago (when there was a bit of a shortage of skilled workers) where that was the case sadly....

3. I'd ask someone to bump your rate.
Do you get annual reviews? Are they good? If so, I'd take that and build a good case for myself and ask for a bump to more than what they are making (depending on how long you've been there add the normal annual increases to the current start rate).

Or quit and reapply??

5. They do reviews I think quarterly now, I can never keep track.
My reviews have been good, I've gotten a couple raises but they're a measly 10 cents each. I started at 9.25 an hour.

If I quit and reapply that would fuck up my scheduling and I probably wouldn't be put back into the department I am in, so that's not happening. And asking someone for a raise isn't gonna work, I am just a number at a heartless corporation that cares more about the heartless corporation above it (I work for an outsourcer that outsources for Comcast) than it does about making its employees happy. On the plus side, I appreciate Marx's writings on labour and such more than ever as a result, haha.

9. Yeah.
Oh well, it's by no means a career choice, as soon as I finish with university, I'm out of there. Maybe sooner if I can find something decent that pays as well or better.

4. What that means is...

...they don't want to encourage anyone staying around very long, imo. But you should see if they won't up your wages.

7. Yeah, pretty much.
Ever wonder why tech/customer support is usually really shitty? It's because the companies treat the employees like shit, so they quit after a few months and as a result, you're usually dealing with noobs, or with jaded motherfuckers who hate their job and are usually bitched at by 40 or 50 people a day, so they stop giving a shit about helping people.

12. I started a job a few years back @ $23,000/year
I was hired as part of a group of 13 people, and we all started at the same $23,000 salary, with annual raises possible thereafter.

Three months later the next group started at $27,000, and we were required to help train them. In essence, we were being paid less than the people who explicitly knew less about the job than we did.

When we complained, the answer was two-fold:

1. It's against company policy to discuss other employees' salaries (a bullshit response)
2. All corporations do the same thing (another bullshit response)

I sympathize!

16. There's a one-two punch that they love to use, too
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 11:11 PM by Orrex
Punch One, used in propaganda and advertising literature: "We're unique in the corporate world because we value X instead of Y. That makes us different from other companies, and that's why you should invest in us/buy our product."

Punch Two, used whenever the company does something shitty: "Hey, that's how things have always worked in the corporate world."

17. sounds like typical corporate bs to me
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 11:14 PM by ikhor
man, ever since i've graduated and worked as a programmer in 2003, i've seen so much stupid corporate bullshit. It never ends either, even if you think you work for a "good" company. Always remember that they will fuck you if it will improve their bottom line.

edit: i never liked integrals either, with their fancy squiggly lines and what not
