Its his birthday today and i got him

1. 2 video games

2. a small japanese remote controlled airplane

3. a skateboard

Thankfully Lisa helped me pick all these things out as i know very little about 11 year old boys... but would you assume my brother will like these things?

4. I've got an 11-yr-old son ...
Yes, he would definitely like that, especially the plane and the skateboard. He's not as into video games as most kids (we don't have any "systems" or whatever you call them), but most of the boys he knows definitely are. Good job...You are generous!

tastes no matter what age or gender. when I was 11 years old I am sure I would NOT like whatever it was that people assumed all 11 year old boys liked at that time.

10. yeah good point. part of why i dont know what tradition 11 year old boys like
is that when my other brother was 11, he liked girly things and cars. i liked girly things. so i never grew up with a boyish boy and consequently have little idea what they would like.

14. you can't stereotype what a person likes.
i am older and gay and if you bought me judy garland's greatest hits or the soundtrack from Rent I would throw them in the trash so fucking FAST but that is what everybody would assume a gay dude would like based on STEREOTYPES. it's not always a choice between boy stuff or girly stuff. there are straight boys that don't like typical boy stuff but not girl stuff either, ie. books instead of sports things. in your case where you have no fucking idea, apparently you don't pay attention to your brother, i would just give MONEY.

now you tell me if you are a good sister to this brother if you have NO IDEA what his interests would be. :D

he likes sports, various video games thingies and remote controlled cars/planes.

but cos i know nothing about these things .. i am perennially confused.

17. ok, that's different. you just don't know specifics about his interests
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 12:28 PM by jonnyblitz
but you generically know what he likes. i am sure you don't get to see him much with your schedule and they grow and change FAST at that age. I have a niece and nephew just a tad bit older. I misread your initial post. stereotyping even for youngish kids is a pet peeve of mine because i never fit the stereotype for any of the categories I could be placed in and that bothered people.
