research question: How much do nannies or babysitters cost?
Am just working on figuring out something for a new neighbor and need to know what the going rate is for nannies or babysitters.

During the summer, three days per week, for a 10 year old girl and 12 year old boy. No driving, no housework.

And what would it be after school only during the school year?

1. I just asked my sister.
She's a very experienced but non-professional nanny. (She's not affiliated with an agency or anything, is what I mean.)

She said that it depends on the neighborhood. She cares for a 13 and 9 year old in an upper-class neighborhood, no driving or housework, and gets $10 per hour. A middle-middle-class neighborhood would be about $7.50. In between neighborhoods would be somewhere in between.

In case it matters, we're in the South with a pretty low cost of living.

Hope that helps.

3. My little sister in an 'au pair'.
She takes care of two kids, 7 and 10, while their mom is at work; she charges $9/hour, but she does cook and do light housework, but no driving. She's in Indiana, btw, so adjust the rate up or down, depending.

:)

4. Would the nanny be living with the family?
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 09:39 AM by ikojo
I have a friend who did the nanny thing for a year for a family in Cherry Hill, NJ. Father was a doctor and mom was a dentist. They were not poor. She took care of three kids and lived in the home with the family.

Her responsibilities included some housework (laundry and such) as well as preparing meals for the kids. The kids' dinner meal also served as the dinner meal for the parents, who got home too late to eat dinner with the kids (makes me wonder why some people have kids but I digress).

This was in 1989-1990. She got paid a whopping $400 per month. They also bought her a car.

An addendum: I have a friend who schleps older people around and for that she charges $15-$20 per hour. This is what she charges if they want her to just hang around the house with them as well. She has told me that she rarely gets less than $20 per hour and for this she does NO houswork for these people as they usually have a maid service for that.

5. thanks for the input
This isn't a rich family; it's a single family with a mom working 3/5 time in a professional job. And the nanny would not be live-in.

Thanks for the feedback -- sounds like $10 hour is the norm.

6. Nannies are 400-600 AED here
thats between $100-175 US dollars per month.

There is an initial government charge for insurance, etc. of around $2000.

We do not have one however.

7. At least minimum wage.
So $7.16 in Washington. $10 per hour is about average for an adult that goes into a home to care for children. If it's a teenager from the neighborhood, I would probably pay $7.50 or so per hour.

I suggest requiring that the person go through a first aid course.
