Pet peeve #951: People talking on cell phones at the gym
There was a lady on the next treadmill last night who was absolutely talking at the top of her lungs into her cell phone. She was so loud that I couldn't even hear my own treadmill running, much less my iPod. Why do people think they need to use their workouts to catch up on all their phone calls? I see people who are on their cell phones the entire time they are working out. Can you really focus on your workout when you're gabbing with Buffy and Misty and Jacob and Justin?

1. Follow her around...
...whilst singing at the top of your lungs.

Works for me in line at the Starbucks....lol.

10. It's fun.
It helps if you're kind of mean looking. (I am.)

When they turn around with that look (you know the one) I smile and wink and stop singing. A good amount of them get the idea and wrap it up. The rest get the encore.

3. #952: Gym Couples.....
There are a number of them at my gym, and they are constantly making out and overtly PDA-ing... One couple apparently cant stand to be apart for any longer than one set of reps, and he is constantly running back and forth from the freeweights to the cardio theater so they can make goo-goo eyes at each other.... :puke:

4. #954: Talking instead of using the equipment.....
I'm there EARLY (on the floor at 4:30am) and people are trickling in. There are some who goto a machine, do one set, then have someone they know come over and they start talking ... for about 10 minutes. If you go over to ask about the machine, "I still have some sets left", then they do a shit set and go back to talking.

DON'T BE A DOUCHEBAG! IF YOU ARE GOING TO TALK, LET SOMEONE ELSE USE IT!

7. #955: Pretending to use the equipment....
I don't go in the mornings anymore. First of all, I am NO morning person. Second, there were literally dozens of people in there on treadmills, bikes, ellipticals with a newspaper in their hands and barely using the machine they were on (walking probably at 1 mph, cycling at maybe 20 rpms, etc).

Read the paper at the coffee shop, assholes!!!!

8. #956: Dousing oneself with fragrance....
Nothing tests the cardio-vascular system better than doing sprints on a treadmill next to someone who bathed in "Floral Breeze" before driving over.

We all want to look and feel our best, hell, that's one of the reasons people go to gyms. But you don't need to doll yourself up to the extreme.

And yes, this applies to men as well. "Polo" makes me gak just as bad.

13. Oh, I hate that too
Sometimes couples will switch machines again and again and again while "training" each other and I'm never able to get on one. ARRRGGGHHH!

18. We have a few couples at my gym where the guy thinks he's some sort of uber-trainer.
He lords over the woman and tells her what to do. Nine times out of ten the guy isn't even doing the exercise or using the machine correctly, but he insists on showing her. Just as often the woman knows what she's doing, way better than the guy. I always wonder why these ladies don't tell their guys to shove it where the sun don't shine.

6. I'm just sick of people talking on cellphones all the time, everywhere.
I have to talk on mine once in a while - for business.

Just think of all those people who are going to end up with brain tumors.

12. Mine allows hands-free phones
but I think they're more concerned with camera-phones than with conversational disruptions.

And they don't really enforce it. I get called once in a while, nobody seems to care. The calls are usually quick, I don't want to chat while I'm exercising. Maybe if I could get the internet on the treadmill console ...

11. Imagine sitting next to that lady
on a long flight, if cell phones were allowed to be used on planes.

The horror.

:P

Or, "People talking on cell phones at (insert public placename here and/or vehicle)."

15. If she can carry on an extended conversation then she's not getting a good workout either.
She should do a shorter, more intense workout and save the conversation for later. Thankfully my gym enforces the no cell phone rule on the floor pretty strictly. I would go absolutely insane if I had to hear that. Can you speak to the trainers on the floor?

I was getting annoyed in the grocery yesterday listening to a over-tanned, overly made-up chick having the loudest, most inane cell phone conversation in every aisle I walked down. I use my cell phone in the grocery to call home and ask "hey, do we need lemons?" or "they're out of your favorite flavor, do you want another one instead?" but I get off immediately and I don't scream. Why this woman thinks everyone wants to hear her stupid gossip at top volume is beyond me. She made herself look like a complete imbecile, but then maybe that's what she was trying to achieve.

One good thing - I was angry enough to burn 584 calories on the treadmill, which is an astonishing number for me!

19. Good job! Still, you shouldn't have to deal with that while you work out. I was surprised
to read on this thread how many gyms don't have or don't enforce the no cell phone rule. I figured that was pretty standard practice. I'm going to have to keep that in mind when we move and I'm looking for a new gym. That is a deal-breaker as far as I'm concerned.

17. If it is any consolation, the real independent studies show that
Cell phones are dangerous. Especially for those humans who are on them 24/7

I used to try to convince people of this, and now I realize how odious so many cell ph users are. If they get brain cancer and die, so much more space for the rest of us.

20. You should complain to the management, if enough people complain
they will make a cell phone usage policy.
