Hardware gurus - I need some help

We have two computers linked by a router and this thing called LinkSys. The main computer that's hooked directly to cable is fine. It's the second computer in another room down the hall that has...well it's sort of like snow on TV (bad reception). This doesn't happen all the time but, it did the same thing with my old monitor. I have 2 ViewSonic thin screens.

Some said my speakers might be too close but, I moved them and it still happens...again sometimes. I wondering if it's some other outside interference. We live in town with houses all around me, bars, etc. Police stations 2 blocks away. Might any of this be causing this problem?

1. Maybe you have a bad video card

Shouldn't have anything to do with the network, so that's out.

Could be radio intereference from outside, but I imagine that would bother your TV and other computer as well.

You may have something there. This video card is quite a few years old. I've had my son upgrade this computer but, I don't recall him putting in a new video card. Thanks!

3. You may have an IRQ problem

such as your video and sound cards fighting over the same IRQ.

That means that a sound would cause static on your monitor, and a change in picture might cause your speaker to make strange noises.

Go into the BIOS and see if plug-and-play made a stupid decision.

4. Check the cable and connectors

Look for signs of wear. Check the connectors for bent pins. My monitor did something like this once. Turns out my cat had developed a cable chewing fetish ... bad kitty.

The video card is a likely suspect. Try re-seating it and see if that helps.

Have you "swapped monitors" ... and does the problem move with the monitor or does it stay with the system?

5. I was thinking of swapping monitors

and see what happens...damn I hate doing that so many damn wires!!! Ok, truth is I'm lazy, lol. But, I'll try that next.

When you see ads for computer desks or computers they never show you the massive amounts of plugs, cables, and cords. They look so neat :silly:

7. Any 2.4Ghz cordless phones nearby?

That's the same frequency as most wireless routers.

8. the phones is a good check as well as other things with elec motors

like refridgerators, etc.

Shielded cables will help with that sort of thing
