Poll question: Favorite "SUMMER" song?
Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 01:28 PM by NightTrain
As a New Englander who is counting the days until winter ends, I thought I'd take a poll about people's favorite tunes with "summer" in the title.

As usual, due to space limitations, I had to leave quite a few songs out. Among them:

ALL SUMMER LONG, The Beach Boys (1963)
HERE COMES SUMMER, Jerry Keller (1959)
ONE SUMMER NIGHT, The Danleers (1958)
SUMMER SET, Monty Kelly (1960)
SAUSALITO SUMMERNIGHT, Diesel (1981)
SUMMER MADNESS, Kool & The Gang (1975)
SUMMER MEANS FUN, Bruce & Terry (1964)
SUMMER SAND, Tony Orlando & Dawn (1971)
SUMMER (THE FIRST TIME), Bobby Goldsboro (1973)
SUMMER WIND, Frank Sinatra (1966)
SUMMER'S COMIN', Kirby St. Romain (1963)
SUMMER'S GONE, Paul Anka (1960)
SUMMER'S LOVE, Richard Barrett & The Chantels (1959)
SUMMERTIME, D.J. Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince (1991)
SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME, The Jamies (1958)

Of course, you're always free to write any of these songs in (or whatever else I may have forgotten).

8. My favorite, the quintessential city summer song
And Sly also evokes the county fair in the summer sun so sharply, you can almost hear the county fair carnival barkers, almost smell the smoking cow dung.

Side note about Hot Fun in the Summertime. In my memory, the record actually came out, or at least wasn't in heavy rotation, you didn't start hearing it until the very end of the summer, back to school time in September. The timing of its release gave the song a tinge of rue and regret that summer was in fact over and that it was time to buckle down.

Second favorite: Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer by Night King Cole. Don't remember the summer. 61? 62? 63? It's hard to say. It was always played every summer all over the radio. Is it still on oldies stations?

5. Summer by Buffalo Tom
Depressing, I know, but all the good summer songs seem to be.

Love this one...

Sight unseen, sad seas
Summer song sung all alone
Dragged across the seven seas
To the beach come follow me

Summer's gone, a summer song
You've wasted every day, every day

Cellophane, grandma's town
Summers letters on the ground
Seven pins the fall begins
When the leaves burn summer ends

Summer's gone, a summer song
You've wasted every day, every day
Summers gone can't wipe it off my hands
Write it in the sand, in the sand

Where've my heroes gone today

6. Summer Sand, by Dawn (Ducking, running away)
Seriously, I'd go with Summer by War, but voted Seals & Crofts since they didn't have any support yet. I'm in SC, so loving summer is downright weird, but I always like the songs (except for Grease)

7. what ? no Mungo Jerry? you know what song i am talking about
it's truly a dorky song but I always think of it when i think of songs about summer...

In the summertime

when the weather is high

you can stretch right up
an' touch the sky

when the weather's fine

you got women
you got women on your mind.
Have a drink
have a drive

go out an' see what you can find.

If her daddie's rich

take her out for a meal

if her daddie's poor

just do as you feel

speed along the lane

do a ton
or a ton an'twenty five

when the sun goes down

you can make it
make it good in a lay-by.

We're not grey people

we're not dirty
we're not mean

we love everybody but we
do as we please

when the weather's fine

we go fishing
or go swimming in the sea.
we're always happy

life's for living
yeah ! That's our philosophy.

Whenthe winter's here

yeah
it's party time

bring a bottle
wear your bright clothes

it'll soon be summertime

and we'll sing again

we'll go driving
or maybe we'll settle down

if she's rich
if she's nice

bring your friends
an' we'll all go into town.

10. My favorite version of "Summertime Blues" is Blue Cheer--
nice heavy version.

And then there's a sadder song, "Summer's Almost Gone" by the Doors. I would listen to that toward the end of the summer and get sad.

35. Blue Cheer was the LOUDEST band I ever saw

Louder than The Who - by about a factor of 10!

I can still remember their guitarist (Leigh Stevens) had 24(!) Marshall amps feeding his guitar. Hell, the bass player had 12!

I honestly though I'd lost my hearing after that show (Woolsey Hall- New Haven, CT)

Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 08:40 PM by notmyprez
I remember hearing or reading that somewhere. But these days there are probably bands that are louder; Motorhead comes to mind.

You saw Blue Cheer? Cool. I think I have the "Summertime Blues" 45, but I'm not certain.

13. Summer Wind by SInatra
Which I sing (pretty well, according to Polly) when drunk and at (or not at) Karaoke Night. I also can manage Frank's "That's Life," "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin and "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan.
I voted for "Summer" by War -- one of the most underappreciated groups ever. "Four-Cornered Room" is one of my personal favorites.

21. I voted for Sly, but an Eagles song about "summer is gone"...
is a very summery (end of summer) song to me too!

Can't remember the name of the tune, though....
"I can see you, brown skin shining in the sun....You've got your hair pinned back, sunglasses on....." something like that. :dunce:

Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 06:44 PM by Norbert
The high point in a produtive but somewhat short career for the foursome. It edged out Hot Fun by Sly & co. by the narrowest of margins.

SUMMER'S COMIN', Kirby St. Romain (1963)

Where in the world did you come up with that one? I haven't heard that song since it was on the charts I bet. I completely forgot about it until now.

Guess where we'll be 27 days from now! And hopefully, we'll also be able to get together in the summer, when it's nice and warm and everything's so much more enjoyable.

Of course, don't expect me to wear a two-piece bathing suit, or (GASP! GULP!) a bikini, I haven't been able to do so for about twenty years now, lol!

In The Summertime

In the summertime when the weather's high,
you can stretch right up and touch the sky,
when the weather's fine,
you got women, you got women on your mind.
Have a drink, have a drive,
go out and see what you can find.

If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal.
If her daddy's poor, just do as you feel.
Speed along the lane,
Do a ton, or a ton and twenty-five.
When the sun goes down, you can make it,
make it good in a lay-by.

We're not grey people, we're not dirty, we're not mean.
We love everybody, but we do as we think.
When the weather's fine
we go fishing or go swimming in the sea.
We're always happy,
life's for living, yeah, that's our philosophy.

Sing along with us, dee-dee-dee-dee-dee.
Da-da-da-da-da...Yeah, we're happy happy,
da-da-da-da-dah.

When the winter's here, then it's party time.
Bring a bottle, wear your bright clothes.
It'll soon be summertime, and we'll sing again,
we'll go drivin' or maybe we'll settle down.
If she's rich, if she's nice,
