My local Borders now sells Gay magazines behind the counter
Overheard a guy ask for the new Advocate & the clerk said all gay magazines are now sold behind the counter along w/Playboy,Bizarre,etc.The guy said it wasn't porn & the clerk told him there were too many angry customers who were offended & they have a lot of kids in there who saw the gay magazines.

Now, this isn't gay porn this is The Advocate,Out,Genre,Instinct,& XY.I would also like to mention the following magazines appear in clear view.

1.) Maxim
2.) Stuff
3.) Sport illustrated swimsuit edition
4.) Gear magazine
5.) Brittish GQ

& a few others with very heteroe friendly/sexy covers. As a heterosexual I am pretty pissed off over this!

1. Ask to see the manager--tell him this is nothing more than censorship
And I'm curious as to where you live. Let me know the outcome--I'm tempted to write a letter to Borders corporate.

13. Not only censorship, but persecution of a people.
Gay people are an identifiable group that are picked out to be discriminated against.

I'm sure that's in plain view, too.

Teach 'em early, teach 'em well. If you're going to let your kids roam around Borders unsupervised, that's why there's a kids section.

When they start roaming beyond the kids section, perhaps they're not kids anymore.

3. That is WRONG! I am really pissed. And yet my daughter can buy
an issue of cosmo girl telling her how to look "sexy for your boyfriend" Grrrrrrr. I would contact the manager and then go up and up and up....until they can answer this.

6. Its located in Simsbury, Connecticut
a VERY conservative town. Even the erotica section is located in the very, very back & theres ony one shelf devoted to gay erotica/issues.etc.

Its not far from a couple schools & next to a movie theatre. This Borders gets alot of Kids during the week & friday & saturday nights.School buses even drop the kids off there. These kids are so rowdy.I won't go in there after 2:00pm because the kids are so rowdy & loud w/no supervision. The managers won't do anything. The kids run the store!I'm sure its a few parents putting the squeeze on managment.

12. SIMSBURY!!!
I live in West Hartford... I will have to visit the one in New Britain/Farmington and raise a stink.

I had to tell off a couple of snotty rich people in that theater for talking during the film. There were people on line at the theater in full length fur coats.

4. Double standards. Hypocrisy. Hypocracy.
Sad that this nonsense has to happen. Homosexuals are not wrong; what people are being taught is.

5. Actually...
Bookstore chains make deals with publishers for display space. The magazine arrangement you see in Peoria is very likely quite similar to the one you see in Sacramento, prescribed on a national, or maybe regional, level. In addition to talking to the store manager, you should contact the regional and national merchandising managers for this chain.

7. contact the actual magazine publisher
They have more influence on store product placement than a store manager.

9. yes, that will help confused gay teenagers
kind of a blatant hint, eh - behind the counter, in the closet, just stay out of view, please, lest some bigots be offended.

10. Booooooooo
That's totally wrong.

I don't mind the porn behind the counter. But not magazines that aren't porn.

Unless they're putting "Bride" behind the counter as well. :-)

Call the publishers.

14. It could be worse. It could be Walmart
Where the gay mags are not stocked and neither are any of the "soft core" heterosexual male mags either.

When Walmart swallows up all other retail outlets, we will only be allowed to read what the Walton family allows us to.

But I copied the original post and emailed it to every address I could find on the Advocates web site...so maybe it will get somebody's attention. I also included the link to this discussion.

18. All the more reason to support your *independent* bookstore!
Paddy puts all the 'adult' mags together in one rack (straight and gay), and puts all non-porn in another. GQ, XY, The Advocate, etc., are all treated as 'mainstream', just like Time or Field and Stream, e.g. . :)

19. I,m surprised borders doesn't keep the mags in the "closet".
now that would be apropos...don't you think. then when one asks for it, it has to come out of the closet.

Forgive me, but the thought was in my brain and I had to spit it out.

22. The Advocate is put with the PORN?!
There is nothing explicit at all about it. And I've been totally impressed by how well written and laid out it is. It's informative. Not at all about sex...That's wrong. Thank goodness someone wrote the powers that be. I always complain...I've made sure that people follow their own policies. If you don't speak up, you're going to get walked on.
