My new iPod will only work with the newest Mac OS? What a rip off!
I hooked it up to my computer and it wouldn't recognize it. When I called Mac support they said I needed the newest version of OSX and it can't be installed on this G4. Does anyone know a way around this? I really don't want to buy a new computer right now.

USB 2.0 versus USB 1.0

I think it is possible, depending on what exact model of computer you have to upgrade your comp to USB 2.0

6. It's probably the OS.
Newer iPods don't work with anything before 10.4.11--I tried it with Panther and the computer read the new iPod as corrupted.

I got my husband an 8G nano and it works fine on my old Mac (old G3 blue & white with a G4 processor).

Since the G3 doesn't have a DVD reader, I took out the CD drive and stuck in an internal DVDR. Then I was able to install Tiger (OSX 10.4) and update it to 10.4.11, which will work with an 8G iPod nano. I've had no trouble at all with using the old USB, except that when I plug in the iPod, I get a message telling me that it would be faster to plug into a USB 2.0.

It really can be done. The DVDR wasn't too expensive; the Tiger software was a little hard to find.

No one on this site is the equivalent of HypnoToad in desperation to bash Apple. In fact, when I saw this thread I would have loved to make a huge wager he'd already posted the typical rant, "Apple is overpriced, blah, blah, blah..."

Another winner.

Meanwhile, years ago in threads like this I recommended to buy Apple stock. There was no way Steve Jobs wouldn't out think and out maneuver the PC clods. Let's see, when I made that recommendation the stock price was in the $60 range. Now it's $170.

Gas prices suck but my Apple stock keeps the vacations coming. :)

In Q2 of this year, 2,289,000 Macs were sold, compared with 1,517,000 in Q207.

There are places to get cheaper macs than direct from Apple.

www.macconnection.com is one of them. Craigslist may work too.

31. The tech specs are clearly stated on the iPod pages
For a Mac, here are the iPod Classic requirements:

Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later
iTunes 7.6 or later5

10.4.9 isn't the latest and even the current OS will run on a G4 processor (867 Mhz or faster according to the OS X page).

"Leopard" requirements: Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

37. Leopard will run on older systems than the G4 867
There's a program called Leopard Assist that works wonderfully. The main catch is you need a better video card than stock for the older machines. Also more RAM, since Leopard guzzles RAM. Larger hard drive also.

Later Tiger updates work fine.

I've got one of these

with a G4 processor and an internal DVDR, and the iPod that I got in December is fine. 10.4.11, no problem.

53. You could try VMWare
VMWare Fusion for OS X

I'm not sure if it will work with your version of OS X but it might be worth a try.

Basically it allows you to run another operating system within your current OS, so you can boot up OS X then open up a virtual version of Windows or some flavour of Linux. The virtual operating system may recognize the iPod where OS X won't.

The last alternative would be a cheap sub-notebook laptop like the eee pc that will run Linux or Windows XP.

off of eBay for around $35 or $40 and installed it on my Apple Pismo notebook (G3, 500Mhz, 512Mb RAM). Then it can be updated using software update to take it up to 10.4.11 (I think that's the ending update to Tiger). It sounds like that would give you what you need to fix this.
