I am making dog food for the dogs

Pippi has the WORST farts, and I am hoping homemade food with yogurt on top will help. I'm hoping the food I'm making will last out most of the week.

I am putting in 5 cups of brown rice, a pound of steak, half a can of chicken broth (which was leftover in the fridge), and I got some frozen carrot/green bean/corn/pea mix vegetables.

Will this plus a little yogurt be healthy, or should I mix it up with other things? :shrug:

If so, what else should I feed them? :shrug:

(It's so weird cooking for the dogs. This food seems really bland, but I know the dogs don't really care about stuff like onions, sage, or black pepper. :P )

1. Dogs can't digest corn, so I wouldn't bother even putting that in there.

And never put onions in dog food, or feed them leftovers that have any kind of onion in them. No onion powder, onion soup, broth made with onion, no onions in any form, because it causes hemolytic anemia in dogs and can kill them, or at the least make them very sick.

I'm interested in this topic...I've got to do something with the dog we just adopted. He was fed nothing but tablescraps mixed with a low-quality dogfood. And since he's been with us, I upped him to a better dogfood and cut the tablescraps, but he's losing weight.

I've been reading up on a raw diet called "satin balls," which some people feed their dogs...I will keep an eye on this thread to see what kinds of suggestions you get.

Out last dog died of hemolytic anemia, and I knew onions were dangerous, but I didn't know how dangerous.

The veggies I got were just a cheap mixed bag of frozen this-and-that. I actually think it's the corn in the dog food that's giving Pippi trouble, but whole corn should be less of a "challenge" for her, I hope. :poopcorn:

I know people who feed raw food, but feeding the dogs raw hamburger sounds gross and dangerous. Especially after being in the fridge most of the week. :o

2. You could add some garlic. Keeps the fleas away.

Also, dogs *love* nutritional yeast.

Dairy and dogs oftentimes doesn't mix well. Otherwise, that's a smart meal. I cook veggies in garlic (as mentioned above) and ginger. I'll also scramble some eggs (instead of meat) with it.

Also, in your last sentence you mentioned onions. Onions are a big no-no to dogs.

6. Cultured dairy works wonders on gaseous dogs.

Yogurt needs to have active cultures. You can also use cottage cheese or buttermilk. But it's not the whole or even a big part of the meal. A tablespoonful 3 times a week unless it's a truly paint peeling situation, then a tablespoon once a day. Believe me, you don't live in a household with 3 Bouviers without learning how to breathe without gas masks.

I've used that many times with great success. Just another idea.

9. add the contents of a cod liver oil cap and maybe some brewers yeast plus some calcium

- you can wash and dry (bake at 300 for 10 min) a couple eggshells then grind them - use a pinch

Changed my views on pet food completely. Most allergies are FOOD allergies. Try this guy's basic diet for a month and see what happens. You will be amazed. No more skin, eye, ear problems.

14. Yeah, I read some recipes on the internets

and the most common responses were about calcium and omega-threes. I crushed up some calcium tablets, broke open a few fish oil caplets (!), and just for chuckles, threw in a couple teaspoons of some old supplement we had hanging around.

They should LOVE the fish oil... smells just like a dead salmon washed up on the riverbank. :P

They love kidneys and liver and every kind of meat, of course. But I mixed it up with oatmeal, rice, pasta, broccoli,celery, carrots, beans. there really is no end to what they will eat mixed up with meat. But onions are not good for them, or so I hear. The carrots seem to not digest and come out just as they went in.

You have lucky dogs.

a small contained open flame at all times will prevent much stink, but there might be few signed hairs. And don't ask me about the house burning down when the dog farted on the couch. That never happened.
