I just found out last week that the city I live in built a fenced-in community garden this spring. $35 gets you a season-long pass on a 20'x20' plot of land, with the city doing the tilling for you in the spring. It is currently full.
So, I call the Office of Recreation to ask about putting my name on a waiting list for next year. She informs me that the people who are currently gardening there now get first dibs on those same plots next year, AND they won't even start accepting new applications until April 6, 2009. Not even a damn waiting list.
I told her that with grocery prices going up, none of the current gardeners will be giving up their plots, and newcomers like me will have no way to get a foot in the door.
I asked if they were planning on building any more gardens, and she didn't know.
This sucks.
