Avatar etiquette question

It seems like I can't read a single thread without seeing someone's homemade avatar that I wish I had thought of. But I don't want to lift an avatar without permission.

Is there a consensus on whether it's all right to adopt someone else's personal avatar?

P.S. Big-time thanks to all the people who are offering up avatars for everyone!
