That's what I get for answering her question this morning. "Dad, who's George Carlin?"

4. Until then, her favorite comedian was Chris Titus.
She actually told me, "This guy is funnier than Titus!"

And she's got good taste in music, too!

He's no George Carlin, but he is funny.

5. I've been posting about her here for, god, six years now!
I remember posting about getting choked up listening to her sing the Preamble to School House Rock.

31. That didn't sound right, I must have been upset at something else. Apologies.
I think that it's extremely cool that she's found him just now and has such an immense stash of insight and coolness to begin sorting through.

10. George Carlin is one of my favorites!
The ones from today just don't do it. I guess it's because my mom always liked the older things so I like the things from before my generation(classic rock music, George Carlin, politics, etc...)

I've purchased some of his stuff, it's really hilarious. It's too bad though that he didn't have a larger following. Some of my friends are still like "Who's George Carlin?" also, and I just go to Youtube and pop open any video.

14. He had a large following, but some of his early success meant he wasn't as exciting later.
He and Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce and some others started pushing the bounds of comedy, lacing their jokes with profanity and sexual references and race, and anything else they could find to shock people. After court cases and public outcries and such, they finally became accepted. Afterwards, comedians like Robin Williams and Steve Martin and Andy Kaufman and Eddie Murphy used what they created, and pushed it further along, so that Carlin seemed tame in comparison, so he faded. But just before my time, he was huge. I remember watching him on video tape back in 83 with some friends, and laughing so hard we were hurting.

Richard Pryor seemed able to move up, become raunchy enough, and he had a social relevance because of his material that he never lost. Pryor could always scare you, make you worry he was going to cross a line you couldn't follow him over. Carlin got a little mundane for a while, then got tough again, but when he did, his topics weren't as relevant. His stuff on religion, for instance, is great, but at the same time it's a little specialized--not everyone sits around thinking of religion that way. Everyone could appreciate his challenges to obscenity and profanity restrictions in his early days, but when he started talking about religion, the audience had to be a bit more intellectual. So he wasn't as ravingly popular, though obviously in some circles he was madly loved. No less funny, and maybe even more sophisticated, but not as easy for the masses to laugh along with.

Just a quick analysis of the dude.

20. She needs field work.
When I took biology in high school, we used to hit the fields around the school, as well as the surrounding trees, to actually look at the specimens we were discussing.

Great way to learn!

And she gets additional gold stars from me for the Beatles, Cash, and Pavarotti (I'm not a Metallica fan....).

Some things just transcend generations.

34. When I took Biology . . .
We took a field trip to the coast (started from Spokane) , haunted tide pools at La Push and Deception Pass, and stomped in the eel grass for crabs in Anacortes. 26 years later, I still cherish the memories.

36. I listened to Bill Hicks... one of his albums
And I was kind of like "meh".

I know that Denis Leary in some ways was inspired by (or stole from) Bill Hicks. but the one I listened to was good, but only good, if you know what I mean.

Dunno, maybe I need to listen to it again, or more albums.

David Cross is... interesting.

Dude was WAYYYYYY ahead of his time. First time I heard "Shock and Awe" I was amazed to learn he had been dead since 1994, because it seemed like his material could have been written in 2004.
