Poll question: Are you a dog or cat person?
I enjoy dogs the most by far. I find them more loving, fun, and obedient. I put up with the work they take.

1. I love them both
I think dogs and cats are both terrific animals. They're both lovable, beautiful, loyal, intelligent and adorable. They have different kinds of personalities and are driven by different sets of instincts. As much as I love dogs, though, I honestly love cats more. I voted for cats, but that I did so is no negative reflection on dogs. It depends on what you want a pet for. If you want an animal who loves to go riding with you and swims and runs and plays frisbee with you, you want a dog. If you want a pet who requires a minimum of care and likes to stay in the house and cuddle with you and keeps him/herself clean, and whom you can allow to run around outside unsupervised (the city I live in has a leash law for dogs but not for cats), then you're better off with a cat. I have a cat and would have a dog too if I lived in the country or had a larger yard with a fence around it. I'd love to have a good frisbee dog but would have to at least put a fence around my yard and put up a doghouse first.

dogs are more my type. I love dogs' excitement when you tell them things they like - things like that.

3. Cats really do see you as serving them!
I'm a cat person. I greatly relate to their refusal to be obedient, or to be dominated. They rule their space. We are soul mates.

I also love dogs, and I have a new puppy creating havoc in the house. But it isn't equal. If I could only have one, it would be a cat. That said, I think I'll go rescue my shoe and play with my pup for awhile. The cats are watching disdainfully from the top of the desk and file cabinet.

38. Yes you do end up serving cats...
that is something that I love about them. They are devious, clever, rude, ignore you when they are in the garden and can very funny.

I have never owned a Dog, I live in London and really feel that they need more space.
I would always vote for cats, I have two, they are very different and very affectionate, and much loved animals.

4. Dogs have owners, Cats have staff
But my boys are more like dogs in cats bodies. They great you at the door and get enthusiastic (especially if we make steak for dinner).

I think cats are more intelligent and intuitive. I grew up with dogs, and I like them, but I have turned into a cat person.

7. The latest US polls on pets
Had that there were more cats as pets than Dogs.

One of the related findings was that more people had dogs as pets than cats, but dog owners tend to have one dog while a large number of cat owners tended to have two or more cats, thus skewing the numbers.

6. I don't know how to answer.
I've always thought of myself as a "dogs & horses" kind of person, and I've always been especially well loved by the dogs and horses in my life.

It's no less true, however, that cats have adored me against my will. Or anyway it was against my will until I got the first of the two cats to whom I now act as domestic slave. I have an affinity with animals.

Those two are Ignignot (the green one) and Err (the purple one), characters on the greatest bestest show on TV ever, Aqua Teen Hunger Force. They are hands-down the funniest guest characters on the show. The quote is what they said when they combined to become the quad laser. It was a damn funny episode...

29. Don't worry about it -
Not too many people have seen it. It's on Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's late-night cartoons aimed at an older audience. That particular show, along with IMO the best they have to offer, is on Sunday Nights starting at 11 EST (10 PM for me) Here's a link to their site -

Don't have time to spend with dogs, otherwise would have a house-ful of them too. Work 12 hour shifts!!

Kitties are easier for work drudges, though their food-to-poop ratio seems to be somewhat askew-----asphew!!

13. As a kid, I just desperately wanted a kitty!
But my mother couldn't deal with them and I developed allergies so my dad got ``us'' a cocker spaniel. I'm sure you can guess whose dog that turned out to be.:-)

I have always had dogs, ever since, until my uncle died and his unpleasant wife wanted to get rid of his animals. Family members took the two dogs, but no one would take the two kitties, so I did, even though I already had two cocker spaniels. I was never sorry. The older one, who I already knew, was a nice cat, but rather reclusive. The one I fell in love with was the ``bonus'' cat, a long haired, affectionate, friendly, fearless, curious, beautiful thing who I named Rhiannon. It was the perfect name for her because she knew it immediately. Of course, she came when she was called and if I wasn't the one driving, I didn't need a carrier to take her to the vet. She would just sit on my lap and I could carry her under my arm and she was content to go anywhere. When she got sick, she had acupuncture treatments. My vet said he was able to do things with her that he never had been able to do with a cat before. Not only didn't she mind the acupuncture, she would just fall asleep. I lost her all too soon.;(

I said I like both equally. I am sharing this chair with my tiny 8-lb. dog and my cat is sleeping under the table.:-)

18. It is great to take on someone's older pets
But sad when you lose them. I had an Afghan hound (she was cut loose in Santa Barbara by some heartless person after they overbred her and I took her home from someone's birthday party..)She was the coolest doggie and my first one...I lost her to lung cancer after having her for 3 years. I would have a dog now if I could, but my work schedule is too crazy and my yard is not fenced in.

31. Thanks for the support
I had two dogs and two cats, all older and all rescue. I felt like the ``Typhoid Mary'' of pets when I lost three of them in 11 months. There is a very dedicated woman, who used to be a vet's assistant, who has her own crematorium so people's lost pets will be treated with respect and the ashes returned to them, if that's what they want. With the first two, I got her compassionate brochure, explaining why she had chosen to do this and telling about all her animals. With the third, I just received the ashes. I tried to explain to my vet that this woman must see my name again and shudder. He didn't get it, as he's known me and my guys well, for years. His wife did. Last month I lost another dog. I took her at eight, when her owner died. She had numerous problems, especially seizures, which I felt we had conquered, but then she got cancer. It was so quick that I can scarcely believe it now. I was taking her for acupuncture and had her on a special anti-cancer diet, among other things. My vet had sent me to an amazing place, which offers treatments not usually available at a conventional practice, with my cat. I had every hope for my dog, but lost her too. When I went to pick up her ashes last week, my vet's wife said that she had told this woman about me and how I take older animals. This woman, an animal-lover herself, said that she thought this was lovely. I still feel horrible that I lost my dog, but, thanks to my vet's wife, no longer have to feel self-conscious when confronted with the woman with the crematorium.;(

21. that's sad...
one of my cats, I personally found. It was a little stray kitten. One of the damn cutest things i've seen. I found it sleeping in a spare tire. I brought it back to my place, and my parents actually let me keep it. It was actually fairly sick at the time, so my mom took it to the vet. It prolly would have died if I didn't find it. Now, it's a lot bigger and healthier...it makes me happy

Yes, i'm a guy. And, I think cats are cute

I have a tendancy to bring home strays, too. But if I bring home one more kitten, my brother, who posts on this site will murder me. So if you see an obit for Boilerbabe.... acceptable for him to adopt a cat. This makes no sense to me. Most guys I know have cats. Actually, I can think of two who are not really fond of dogs, but love cats. You are to be commended for saving your kitty. You now have the best kind of friend for life. Kittens, I think, are the cutest baby animals. You may not want to hear anymore about animals after hearing my stories, but I admire your compassion for animals. I think that's one of the most important qualities a person can have.:D

16. cats rule dogs drool
I voted for cats, as I am cat-owned.

I like dogs a lot, but, like someone else said, they need a yard to run around in, and I've never had one.

cats are much easier pets, and mine are very affectionate with me.

They greet me when I've been gone, like to curl up in my lap, etc.

My friend's dogs are always happy to see me when I go over; and show it with slobbery kisses, and jumping up on me etc.

Actually, I can't think of any kind of animal I dislike.

I love dogs for their unconditional love, their enthusiasm about life, and their cheerfulness. I love cats for their ability to judge character, their independence, and their contentment.

Most of all, I love rats--they have the cheerfulness of dogs, the independence of cats, an intelligence that's almost scary, loyalty to those they love, and the ability to keep going no matter what life throws at them, both as individuals and as a species.

35. Senator Vest's Tribute to the Dog
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 09:26 AM by Buns_of_Fire
...The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only be may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

(On edit: This being said, in the next life, I figure I'll probably come back as a cat. Not that there's anything wrong with that... )

36. Definitely cats
when I was little I was smaller than most kids and too many dogs I grew up with saw me as prey. I got jumped and bit or mock-bit too many times. I carried that fear with me into my 20s and would purposely avoid dogs. :-(

Now, being bigger and older, I can tolerate and get to like dogs if 1)they're on a leash, 2) they don't bark, 3)approach me calmly. IOW, I don't like the Dino treatment.

That said, the best dog I ever knew was a little mutt that my uncle had. Looking back he must have been some sort of Jack Russell terrier mix. Short white hair, brown spots, a little larger than a cat, large goofy brown eyes. Even I loved that dog. :D

But I feel a special affinity for cats. We're too much alike.

39. You must be a man.......
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 11:49 AM by CDY
because I noticed you listed obedient as a loving trait! I love both cats and dogs. Their personalities are different, but cats are just as loving as dogs. They are also just as playful. When it comes to obedience, cats listen too. They will just refuse to obey you once you leave the room! I think as a whole that cats are smarter than dogs; however, I think that dogs are more owner-oriented that cats are. When I come home from work, my dog is waiting at the door with lots of love; and I love that about him. The cats are more subtle with their affection. I am an animal lover in general really. I feed racoons, squirrels, and wild birds. Most people have a preference as to which animal they like best, but I try to find the best in all of their personalities.

Also, obedience is good to an extent; but to base the reason for getting an animal that was once wild on how much you can control it it is sad to me. I hate to see these dogs that are over-trained. They remind me of members of the Third Reich. For Christ sakes, let them have some fun and a personality of their own.

cats just won't warm up to you like dogs or be as affectionate - as a rule. Also, obedience is just one trait I look for. My dog Reba has some independent spirit, and that's good. I just want her to obey in crucial situations.

I have five cats and a dog. My cats are very affecionate with me and with people that they like! I love curling up on the sofa and having my cats snuggle around me with tons of purring. Maybe that is it. I love when cats purr; it is so soothing. I read an article once that said cats are good for people with stress or anxiety, and dogs are good for people who suffer from depression. I must be screwed up because I love both! Cats ARE warm and affectionate as a rule, but only when they want to be. I don't know why you think they are not.

47. No need to be sorry
I just think that cats are as affectionate as dogs, and I think that they do love unconditionally the same as long as they aren't mistreated. I love my dog to death and wouldn't trade him for the world. My cats are special too though and much easier to care for. It is true that most dogs will let you do more to them than cats. Cats do not like to be rough-housed with. I do not think that makes them unloyal creatures that do not love unconditionally. I think that makes them intelligent creatures that know well enough to stay away from someone who will hurt or irritate them!

We can leave it at that. I just do not see it that way, from my experience and from publications. Dogs won't often let people hurt them - they are intelligent, too. Anyway, I have no intention of doing that, so it's not relevant to me.

They are always so loyal and more carefree. Cats are alright, but if you rub them the wrong way once, it takes them forever to forget. Dogs are more energetic, in most cases too. Besides, a cat is too small for me.
