David Sedaris - best writer ever
I don't know if anyone here has ever read his stuff, but I just got "Me Talk Pretty One Day," and it could be the funniest book I've ever read. Plus he seems to dislike the Raleigh-Durham area almost as much as I did when I moved here. His "Santa Land Diaries" is also classic. I'm looking for a link to the real media file that has it.

1. "Me Talk Pretty" is one of the funniest books ever...
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 04:18 PM by Richardo
His occasional articles in the New Yorker also rock....as do his audio pieces on "This American Life" on NPR.

His childhood stories are even more funny when you think of his sister Amy ("Strangers with Candy") in the same household.

I've put both "MTPOD" and "Holidays on Ice" as staff recs at the book store...

Read David! Fall over laughing! :D  :D

2. Sedaris is whose picture you see in the dictionary when you look up
"ROFLMAO"

" . . . I worried that the shoes I wouldn't be caught dead in might actually be the shoes I am caught dead in."

The guy's a god.

that's David Rakoff you're quoting. David is hired to do a piece for a Nature magazine and travels to N.H.; i know that story well.

David Rakoff is intelligent and very funny.

22. mea culpa! It's strange, buddhamama, I hear that quote in
Sedaris' voice. Did he read Rakoff's story on "This American Life" years ago? Because I'd swear that's where I heard it. I guess that's why I always associated it with Sedaris.

Still -- Sedaris is an insanely funny human being.

12. I met him...
...when I worked at Borders and he came in for a reading. I have a picture of the two of us. I even had his address in France for a while. He sent a thank you letter to the events coordinator at Borders thanking her for the great treatment he'd gotten. One of the things he really appreciated was me showing him to our smoke deck. He is a great lover of smoking. He's also very cute in a young Woody Allen-ish sort of way.

18. "Casserole-wielding mastadon..."
Edited on Sat Feb-21-04 03:27 AM by Sufi Marmot
"One might think Melinda Delvecchio is thoughtful and generous until they pull back the gleaming foil under which lies her hateful concoction of overcooked pasta stuffed with the synthetic downy fluff used to fill plush toys and cheap cushions".

"Later that afternoon I was confronted, once again, by that casserole-wielding mastadon, Melinda Delvecchio, who grew tearful when informed that I would sooner dine on carpet remnants than another of her foil-covered ethnic slurs." -from "Glen's Homophobia Newsletter" in Barrel Fever. That line always amuses me immensely...

And "Me Talk Pretty One Day" about learning French in Paris makes me laugh so hard that my sides hurt...
