Anyone ever use Lindows?
Get to download it for free because I'm registered with Win4Lin, so I'm wondering if it's any good.

1. people seem to like it okay
it's basically debian linux for windows xp users. everything looks like xp and apt-get has been repalced (well, apt is still there, but hidden) with a for-pay click-to-run service

give it a shot

2. What the hell.
I have a couple of spare hd's laying around.

How's the compatability? I'm assuming Office will run, but what about games? Also, is the speed as good as Linux?

4. er lindows IS linux
that's been made "user friendly" like windows XP (insert laugh track)

anything that will run on linux runs in lindows

ms office will run with a special addon from codeweavers (b ased on the WINE project)

5. Um...
I know it's Linux. I just wondered if the compatability layer (I was guessing it was WINE but wasn't sure) caused any speed issues, kinda like XP. :P

I'm assuming the addon is included, or are they calling it "Lindows" because it's so easy to use...(can I borrow that laugh track?)

Switched to Red Hat pretty quick though.

The problem with Lindows is the distribution is very bare-bones, i.e. it doesn't include such vital Linux packages as gcc, which you need to install just about any other program, and installing gcc from scratch is more trouble than it's worth.

Lindows also comes with no office software or much else, except the bare minimum Internet software such as Netscape. Lindows instead wants you to pay to use their download service to download new packages, which is also more trouble than it's worth at 56k. It was cheaper and a lot faster to buy a Red Hat distribution and install it, which comes with everything you will ever need, than it would have been to download the stuff one by one from the Lindows site. I'd avoid it.

On edit: But what the heck, if it's free give it a try.
