Anyone here live or know anyone in Key West?
My best pal is trying to move down there; she's been offered a job as a *boat monkey* for the summer. We've been looking online all day (including the newspaper) but everything is like...$1,100+/mo. for even like a 1 br. :eyes:

I was wondering if anyone had any info, online or non-online sources where we might find something that's not directed at tourists. Even the *long-term* rentals are outrageously expensive and gorgeous, and I refuse to believe that NO ONE that lives in Key West just has a normal house/apt that's not like a billion dollars a month.

Thanks! :hi:

1. doesn't a boat monkey live on the boat?
That seems only reasonable. But what do I know? I'm planning to visit Key West some day, that's all. Hope your pal can find something, but I would definitely ask about living aboard.

2. Wow! what a fun job!
I'd do that for a summer. :toast: to your friend.

I don't have any leads though. Sorry. The Y, maybe? I don't even know if they rent out rooms anymore.

4. There are lots of mobile homes on the Keys.
She could check into that.

8. I've known people in Key West
it's very expensive.

Try living on a boat, finding some eurotrash sailor who is docked in Key West but partying in Europe for the summer, or something similar.
Seriously, that's probably your best bet.

6. Key West Chamber of Commerce

Amazing what you can find on Google.

I found the Website for the Key West chamber. They do have a relocation page for would-be full-time residents. The vendors seem geared toward the non-tourist crowd.

Hope this helps.

Barring that, I would call the realtors and just ask them where they live.

7. Yes I do know someone who lives down there
My aunt and uncle live on a key like 30 miles from the city of Key West. Great place to be, I wish I could be there now.

10. Oh, dear
I'm from south Florida and lived in Key Largo for many years. It's expensive enough there but Key West is through the roof! I looked at an apartment there - oh, 18 years ago - when I was interviewing for a managerial job that I didn't get. It was very expensive, one room, ancient, and had a huge hole in the floor. The landlord said I could just put furniture over the hole and since it was, by far, the best thing around, I put down a deposit which I lost.

To live in Key West, one must be willing to accept a MUCH lower standard of living.
