47. Shrieve was/is great...
A teenager when he hooked up with Santana, he's gone on to a fine career with many jazz/rock bands and artists, with lots of good solo stuff as well. (He had a hit in '76 with the band Automatic Man.)

You can glimpse him backstage in "Gimme Shelter"---he's with Phil Lesh and Garcia when they're told that Marty Balin was beaten up by the Hell's Angels.

"That's not right," says Phil.

Ah, the '60s...

38. Buddy Harman - also the best country drummer
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 02:30 PM by unidentifiedbassplay
Also the best rockabilly drummer. Also the best effing BLUEGRASS drummer.

You may not be able to name one tune he played on, but if you were alive during the 50's and 60's you've probably heard several.

(ON edit: Here's a pic. Buddy Harman is at right. For extra points, CAPTION this picture of the Nashville A-Team):

43. I wasn't aware that drummers are involved in Bluegrass music.
Really.
It is played so fast and fluidly anyway there doesn't seem to be any bottom to it.
My sister and her husband are Bluegrass musicians and I don't think they've ever used a drummer.
Maybe it's just sibling rivalry-lol.

44. Back in the 50's and 60's...
Flatt & Scruggs used to use a snare drummer in the studio, tastefully played as backup. So did Jimmy Martin, and there are actually pictures of him and the Sunny Mountain Boys using a snare drummer.

JD Crowe & the New South used a drummer with full kit in the 70's. The results IMHO were not good - a tasteful jazz/swing drummer with some finesse might have done well, but Crowe's drummer at the time played too loud and sounded like a fugitive from a polka band besides.

One of my favorite Bluegrass Urban Legends concerns the unknown drummer on some of the Stanley Brothers' King Records recordings which feature some almost inaudible drumming. The rumour is that soul singer James Brown (who also recorded for the King label) may have been asked to help out on these sides. No proof, no documentation, no Snopes, but a helluva good story.

As for Buddy Harman - I refer you to a cut by Red Allen and the Osborne Brothers called "Love Pains." It kicks major big-fellah booty - trust me on this.
