Its misery!! :)
Depends on what type of "shop" you plan to open. Where are you located? SBA can help educate you as to what you need to educate yourself about...if that makes any sense. If you dont have an absolutely clear business model and havent done the research, you will likely be told to come back when you are prepared.
Plan on a full body cavity search in terms of their criteria for recommendation. Remember you will still need to go through a bank for any loan you might need; the SBA serves as "someone in your corner" when you go to the bank. Be aware that age, education, experience all play a part in how seriously EVERYONE will take you.
If it were me starting out, I would plan on spending probably 6 months or so putting together a complete business plan, talking to future competitors (yes, they will help), getting financial issues straightened out (student loans, cc etc) and developing a very pretty proposal that you can take to the bank, or private investors. Include EVERYTING. Spend a few bucks on a new suit, polish your shoes, and for god sakes dont chew gum! :)
If you are serious about it, plan on 16 hour days for a few years. Dont let NO get in your way, especially on the financing. There is alwasy someone out there willing to invest if you have a serious and well researched business model. Learn how to network and the money will find you.
