Student Accused Of Wearing Blackface - "No, I'm About To Rob A House"
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 11:50 AM by matcom
<snip>

The student told officers that the face paint was camouflage - not blackface - and that he was actually on his way to rob a house, Hall said.

"As far as we know, this was all a misunderstanding," Sheaffer said. "We are working with the university and (the Office of Greek Life and Experiential Learning)."

Even though the student claimed that he was going to attempt a burglary instead of dressing in blackface, DPS officers will continue to research both scenarios, Hall said.

"We are still looking at it, investigating it and working with other departments on campus," Hall said. "So it could be looking at burglary, it could be other things as well that we would be looking at."

3. ????
So which would incur the bigger penalty?

Attempted robbery or blackface?

I'm not touching that one with a 99 an 1/2 foot pole.

5. the fact that they were unable to find him at first
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 11:51 AM by muriel_volestrangler
would seem to back up his story of camouflage. Presumably someone "wearing blackface" would want to be seen - otherwise what's the point?

9. Shades of minstrelcy.
The Minstrel shows of old used to do blackface bits. If done today, these bits would be considered quite racist indeed.

13. true !
When the MGM cartoons were syndicated for TV, the studio went through and painted over all the images of "Mammy Two-Shoes", Tom's disciplinarian. Technically not blackface, though, because you never saw her face - they had to paint over her ankles and arms! The voice was redubbed in an Irish brogue by legendary cartoon talent June Foray (the voice of Rocky the Squirrel and Natasha).

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: For all we know, Mammy OWNED the house. She was the authority figure! She never did anything dumb! If her accent was offensive, they could have ONLY redubbed!

Did I say :wtf: already?

12. Blackface was the traditional makeup of minstrel shows-
---which were a 19th century form of American "entertainment" often featuring white performers dressed and made-up (with blackface) to look like African-Americans. Said shows featured much racist materail and broad, crude caricatures of black people.

These shows began during slavery times, but continued into well into the 20th century. Such notable performers as Bing Crosby and yes, even Bugs Bunny, have appeared in blackface on film, doing "minstrel-show" bits. "Amos and Andy" were two famous early 20th century white comedians who appeared in blackface. Indeed, Al Jolson, the famed entertainer of the 1920s and '30s, appeared in blackface in the very first "talking picture," 1927's "The Jazz Singer." Spike Lee made a provocative (if not entirley successful) film called "Bambozzled" a few years back that envisioned a modern-day TV network winning big ratings with an old-fashioned racist minstrel show.

When you hear blackface, think of the apartheid/segregationist laws of the American South which weren't (officially) outlawed until the mid-20th century. Indeed, "Jim Crow" was the name of a popular "nigger minstrel" song from the 1820s.

Yep. Lotta great history here in the U.S. of A.!

16. The most popular form of entertainment in US for 70 years...
ALL OVER the country.
Mister Tambo and Mister Bones are the roots of the American entertainment industry.

I'm actually a bit of a scholar of minstrelsy.
