Poll question: Guitar Players - Your favorite electric guitar
Hah, my first poll. I am spending way to much time here.
I have a Strat, a Rickenbacker 330-12,and a Washburn but I have to admit my favorite is a import Hamer sunburst archtop. It just feels good in my hands.

Maybe I'll do an acoustic later.

2. The one that got away...1981 Fender Bullet H-2, made in US.
Dual humbuckers with coil taps, all sorts of great sounds came from that thing. But, I had money problems in the late 1990s, and the guitars had to go in the "great hobby purge of 1998". I was just learning at the time, and I still have never learned to play. :-(

6. It's never to late.
I'm no great guitarist, more rythum and vocals than anything, but I can hold my own.
You ought to pick it up again.

18. EKO - I know, I never heard of it b4 I bought it at a party 14 years ago
.
.
.

Actually it's an acoustic 12 string with the pickup built right into the neck at the top fret

And a beauty sounding instrument it is too, with or without an amp.

Built in 1972, and even excessive googling can't find a picture of it - EKO's yes, but the 1972 acoustic/electric, no luck.

And it ruined me from playing 6 strings,

now six strings sound like there's something missing!

32. Eko made great guitars.
Italian company. Don't know if they're still producing; but they really turned out some beautiful archtops, electric and acoustic.

14. Love the sound but
a pain in the ass to keep in tune when playing out live. I used to schedule the 12 string tunes in the beginning of a set just so I could tune the guitar before hand during the break.

If you do an acoustics poll, be sure to include Takamine. That was my first.

9. What, no Tele?
The first, and to many, still the best.

I also have a custom shop Strat that I love dearly.

And then there's my PRS goldtop P90, which has to be the most "vibratey" solid-body I've ever played. Love it!

13. For those of you who are interested
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 11:11 AM by lovedems
My hubby is a Musicians Institute graduate (guitar) and he kicks ass!

His dream guitar (right now) is the Zakk Wylde bullseye Les Paul. He is currently playing a Fender and a Washburn, but those are for practical reasons, we can't afford the Les Paul, yet.

He would be happy with any Les Paul. He loves those guitars.

Edited for picture.

They are heavy. But look on Ebay, they are not much more $$$ than a "good" strat.

21. My brother (who can't play the guitar at all)
Edited on Fri Feb-20-04 11:17 AM by lovedems
has a Gary Moore signaute series Les Paul. He is one of those types who has all of the "gadgets and toys" because he can afford them, not because he actually uses them. The Gary Moore picks up all my brothers mistakes when he plays. I think it is safe to say a Les Paul is not necessarily a good guitar for a beginner. My husband LOVES the sound of a good Les Paul combined with the right amp.

Anyway, my husband borrows that alot. He is very particular about his guitars and often customizes a new guitar to suit his needs. He is very good at "solos" and likes to scallop? the frets at the bottom of the neck (I don't know if that makes any sense to you, it didn't to me at first).

He wants to wait and get a good Les Paul. A top of the line. We bought our son a mini Epiphone Les Paul for Christmas. It is a pretty cool mini guitar and it works perfectly for his small hands.

My husband is particular and doesn't really care for the cheap Les Pauls, he can hear the difference. He thinks the ones that are handmade in American are far better than the ones mass produced overseas. Is that the difference between an Epiphone Les and and a Gibson Les?

17. Check out the cheap version
Gibson just introduced an Epiphone copy of the Zack Wylde - it's not very expensive and appears to have the same pickups. Some of the Epiphones are suprisingly close to the original.

22. That is funny, my husband has already checked into it!
He said it is 800.00 and doesn't have the same pick-ups.

He is very picky about his guitars. He has a blonde Fender that looks like crap but he plays the hell out that thing. I am not kidding, it is beat up and scratched to hell but he has that guitar for along time and loves it.

He is playing a Washburn with Buzz Feitin (?) tuning and he loves that.

34. A Drummer Friend Of Ours Is An MI Grad
He played with Greta and Grade 8. Grade 8 went on the Ozfest tour for 5 months, went into the studio for their 2nd album for 3 weeks, then broke up.

But, Scott is a terrific player and he'll land on his feet.

20. Anything by Doug Irwin would be nice. . .
As would anything made by Steven Cripe before he died (he made homemade fireworks as a hobby and had an unfortunate accident).

These were the two responsible for Jerry Garcias custom guitars. Cripe actually made the first guitar that he sent to Jerry from photos and guesswork regarding Garcias other guitars.

For mainstream guitars that are "readily" available, a PRS archtop would be nice :)

24. I Voted Ibanez
That's because my two favorite guitars ever are my JS-1000 and my friends 1987 Artist Series. Two phenomenally easy playing guitars, with slim, C-radius necks, carved bodies, great finishes, sweet tone pickups with coil tap and floating bridges. They're both great guitars and as easy to play and wonderful sounding as anything i've ever strapped on.

If i had to pick based upon a generic, and not personal, basis, i'd say the Stratocaster is the greatest guitar ever built. More flexibility than just about anything except for those guitars which were simply expanding the concept of the Strat itself. (Like my Ibanez.)

It's absolutely amazing how much stuff Leo Fender got right in 1954. I'm a Tele player too, but that's because there's that one sound a Tele makes that you really can't reproduce with anything else. I get a pretty darn good Strat tone out of my JS, but not that Tele sound!

So, i picked Ibanez, mostly because nobody else did and i love mine and my guitar player's a lot. But, they're really extensions of Leo's vision from 40 years ago. That is a wonderful innovation. If i had the choice between a Les Paul and a Strat, it would be no contest. I'd take the Strat. For the money, i could buy a 2nd Strat, fix the bridge, add humbuckers and have two guitars for less than the price of one Gibson. And both would have necks that fit my hand better!

25. Current Stable of Guitars...
'86 (?) Fender Stratocaster, USA made, Lace Sensor pickups. The current favourite.

'85 Ibanez RG550, stock, except for the locking strap (guitar flips!)

Yamaha 12 string acoustic. Great for strummin' in the family room.

Kramer Ferrington 6 string acoustic w/bolt on neck. Easy access to all 22 frets!

If I ever pick it up again on a remotely serious basis, I'd snag a PRS in a heartbeat.

27. My favorite is a Dillion Explorer copy
I love this guitar. If anyone is short on cash, or wants a professional quality instrument without paying an arm and a leg, do yourself a favor and check out Dillion. They are made in Korea and Vietnam.

I have 5 Dillion guitars now, an Explorer, 2 Les Pauls, 1 PRS copy, and a Tele (with the f-hole). 5 super guitars, and they sound and play and look like a million bucks.
