1. Trigger Happy seems to be a 'somewhat' original piece (no pun intended)

I just hope Mr. Yankovic is sending a message that guns are not the best possessions to have.

He really captures the excruciatingly banal detail of the original.

The Led Zep interpolation in the middle is his band. They are so great - without their spot-on recreations, his parodies wouldn't be nearly as good.

6. I like Weird Al...
...and ya gotta admit that even if he is very 'out there', he's a craftsman when it comes to music. He's strange, but not shoddy.

Kinda reminds of Spike Jones, what somebody said of him. If you get parodied by Spike Jones (or in this case, Weird Al), then you KNOW your music's good...
or at least popular (Eat It comes to mind...).

8. he has a crack backing band though
Most of the same guys have been with him for most of his career, and they almost always nail the exact sound of the band they are parodying.

Even if song parodies and novelty songs are a lesser genre, Weird Al should get some credit for the sheer amount of professional polish he puts into them. Listen to any other novelty song performer (Spike Jones excepted) and you can hear the difference.

10. I find Yankovic's stuff tougher to compose than what he's spoofing
I think his is an infinitely harder task to accomplish... take an already written/arranged song, come up with a concept for the parody, then write the lyrics so that the rhymes and rhythms match up, and make it all funny at the same time...

The guy is either a certified genius or an authentic wacko, and i love it...

11. Weird Al is a genius parodying Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blue in palindromes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_pYYff7qP0

Heck, even the title is a palindrome!

Bob

I, man, am regal - a German am I
Never odd or even
If I had a hi-fi
Madam, I'm Adam
Too hot to hoot
No lemons, no melon
Too bad I hid a boot
Lisa Bonet ate no basil
Warsaw was raw
Was it a car or a cat I saw?

Rise to vote, sir
Do geese see god?
"Do nine men interpret?" "Nine men," I nod
Rats live on no evil star
Won't lovers revolt now?
Race fast, safe car
Pa's a sap
Ma is as selfless as I am
May a moody baby doom a yam?

Ah, Satan sees Natasha
No devil lived on
Lonely Tylenol
Not a banana baton
No "x" in "Nixon"
O, stone, be not so
O Geronimo, no minor ego
"Naomi," I moan
"A Toyota's a Toyota"
A dog, a panic in a pagoda

Oh no! Don Ho!
Nurse, I spy gypsies - run!
Senile felines
Now I see bees I won
UFO tofu
We panic in a pew
Oozy rat in a sanitary zoo
God! A red nugget! A fat egg under a dog!
Go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog

Pure genius!

17. While "Weird Al" Yankovic does both song and style parodies,
he has created more than one original tune that has no alegiance to any one band or sound. Mr. Yankovic also plays a difficult instrument to master and does it well. Since he also does all of the writing of the music and lyrics himself, it shows how talented he really is. It is not easy making silly songs that actually work over the long run which is one reason for his enduring popularity. From his early work such as Yoda, One More Minute, and Stop Draggin' My Car Around to the more modern work of White and Nerdy, Germs, as well as the sublime The Saga Begins (with a brilliant video), Mr. Yankovic is a person one can listen to and enjoy for many hours regardless of the time of the work being listened to. It is also fun trying to find the naughty in the lyrics since generally that is hidden.

He is also really not that bad looking (depending on the wig.) And still looks quite young to this day for someone who is nearly fifty.

20. That is the thing people forget/don't understand....
musicians like Spike Jones, Victor Borge, and Weird Al are/where first and foremost excellent musicians who used comedy to enhance the audience experience.

29. Yup.
I love "One More Minute". It takes the "I'm so sad, my dog died, my wife left me, my pickup got repossessed" soap opera country genre, and beats it to death.

And it's not an easy song either.

Well I heard that you're leavin'
leavin'
Gonna leave me far behind
So far behind
Now you've found another lover

You've decided that I'm not your kind

So I pulled (I pulled) your name out
of my Rolodex
And I tore all your pictures in two
And I burned down the malt shop where
we used to go-o-oh
Just because it reminds me of you (YEAH!)

Nobody's mentioned PDQ Bach in the parody genre. He has a Ph.D. from Juilliard School of Music. He found out he could make a lot more money making fun of classical music than he could by being serious.

Anna Russell studied voice and had a great career making fun of opera.
