I had to just do the face, if you do the whole body and try to shrink it down, the lines get all screwed up and u cant tell what it is. hope this works for you.

83. What program do you use?

I use IrfanView, a freeware picture editing program.

I open up the original image, crop the selection (in a square ratio), open up 'enhance colors' an up the contrast, brightness and/or gamma correction to get as vivid a pic as possible.

Then I reduce to 48x48.

If necessary, I'll use the auto sharpen feature to make it stand out.

I don't even switch to a bitmap. I do this all in the original gif or jpeg. Although I sometimes have to tinker with it in paint.
