Name some mainstream cultural items that hipsters are still willing to embrace.
Edited on Wed Jun-11-08 04:18 PM by PeterU
You know, like bands or movies of which you've actually heard. Movies that play in normal, first run multiplexes and bands whose biggest gig wasn't two-for-one Tuesdays at the Audio Box Saloon in Saginaw, Michigan.

I'm curious as to all input from any resident hipsters here.

From what I know of hipsters, they seem to like Kevin Smith movies and John Cusack. Am I right about these observations?

2. From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipster_%28contemporary_subculture%29

"In the 1990s and 2000s, the 1940s slang term hipster began being used in North America to describe young, well-educated urban middle class and upper class adults with leftist, liberal, or libertarian social and political views and interests in a non-mainstream fashion and cultural aesthetic. While definitions vary, hipsters are often associated with alternative music, "indie" culture (independent rock and independent film), and other non-mainstream products, such as vintage clothing. Hipsters may dress in a campy or ironic manner, pairing expensive vintage clothes with working-class clothing. The social scene in some major cities is centered in a gentrified downtown area where DJ clubs, fair-trade coffee cafés, and organic restaurants sit side-by-side with thrift stores and working class taverns."

Then again, I don't think many hipsters place much cred in Wikipedia, so I might be wrong.

18. well maybe not a prosty
but I forever equate tats on women = biker chick.
In the 70's only biker chicks and former biker chicks had tats.

And I don't equate those biker chicks with todays biker chicks who have the hubby who is balding, pot bellied, chomping down viagra, and got the bike with his severance pay from the union auto factory that closed down but not before he voted for less benefits and pay for the 20 year olds coming into it just before it sold to some neo-con private group that is more than happy to drive down the wages some more.

At least 'Big Johnson' got his bike.

19. I got my tattoo 22 years ago. I love my tattoo, and I am NOT embarrassed about it.
My artistic tattoo is on my left shoulder. I have ten more, but they are just dots used to line up my lead blocks for when I had Radiation Therapy.

24. LOL - Well, it's not WHAT you say around here necessarily.
Far more often it's WHO you are when you say it.

You're not the only one, you won't be the last. FWIW - I thought it was funny. I didn't read it the same as everyone else though, obviously.

20. So let me get this straight...
If I put my husband's name over my heart in remembrance of him, I am now a prostitute, or a loose woman?

That's rich.

DS1 was right when he said to keep an eye on you.

I love that my wife and I are both whores.

Well, I knew that about her already, since she has one of those tattoos known as a "tramp stamp" amongst some male DU posters.
