3. Good choice also!
I noticed Kareem was sitting in the row just behind the Lakers last night.

Of course, he was nine feet tall and all he had to do was that little sky-hook that nobody could block.

8. Kareem, Moses, Sabonis, Jordan, Lebron
all come way before Kobe

He's good no doubt but he takes wild ass shots that only in this day and age of the NBA (World B. Free not included) and on a one-man team would that be allowed. Even Pistol Pete got a lot of grief from his teammates about excessive shots and trick plays.

14. Not hatin'
I just don't think he is all THAT great.

Lebron is clearly better in every way than him IMHO

Hell Garnett is the prototypical 21st century player

I don't watch a WHOLE LOT of NBA but there are several players I would take before Kobe

Lebron
KG
Wade
McGrady
then Kobe-maybe in front of McGrady

21. If that's not hating, it's definitely delusion
The only person on that list that means as much to his team is Lebron.

KG is a choker, and still is.

Wade could've been pretty good, but he bangs himself up more than AI. Also Wade is unproven without Shaq.

McGrady is just a mediocre star. One may as well take Baron Davis rather than Tracy.

20. Sadly for Lebron he may never win a title
Well he won't win one with the Cavs that's for sure.

Kobe has 6-10 years left and most of that time there will be enough talent alongside him to win championships. Heck they may even still beat the Celts with him being the only Laker trying at all.

27. I feel terrible for LeBron!
Damn, if he played for almost ANYBODY else, with any other players around him that had even an iota of talent, he'd have a ring. I'd take LeBron over Kobe any day of the week. How long does he have on his contract before he could go elsewhere?

5. Can we try to limit it to the two choices?
Specifically, I loathe those idiots who suggest Kobe is "better than Jordan." That would include Kobe himself, who suffers from no shortage of ego.

Thanks for your assistance. That is all.

Nothing compares to 11 championships, and he was the coach for the last two.

Of the two choices given, Jordan is clearly better. But, Bryant needed O'Neal to win titles, and Jordan needed Pippen (and later Pippen and Rodman).

15. Kobe
No one would even know who MJ is if Fred Brown hadn't thrown that pass to James Worthy in the national championship game in 1982.

MJ was just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.

17. I'm going to have to disagree with that
I have to say that watching ACC basketball before that and during that time RELIGOUSLY I (my buddies can back me up on this) had NO IDEA he was that good. A great athlete sure but he played the #2 spot in the UNC system just like every shooter before or after him. Once he got to the pros then we saw why everyone was so gaga about him.

Jordan hit the shot BEFORE the Brown turnover and he has said it was the turning point of his career-the shot not the turnover.

Everyone expected Worthy to take their last shot

Eric "Sleepy" Floyd had just hit a jumper in the lane to give Georgetown a 62-61 lead as 61,612 fans looked on at the New Orleans Superdome. Carolina called a timeout with 32 seconds remaining. Smith instructed point guard Jimmy Black to draw the Hoya zone defense to one side of the court and look to get the ball inside to James Worthy. But Black couldn't get the ball to Worthy. Smith had designed the play so that if that happened, Black could swing the ball to an open man on the far side of the court. Black found that open man, freshman Michael Jordan.

16. neither of them!
Jordan started this new way of playing basketball that totally sucks. When I was a kid, players were not allowed to take six steps with the ball in their hand before shooting. It's still against the rules, supposedly, but many players, like Kobe, do it all of the time. Those people suck. Did Magic Johnson ever need to travel? Isiah Thomas? No way.

25. Pat Riley
a Magic-less Riley just constructed defenses designed (check results for effectiveness) to clog up the middle and stop that guy from Chicago who could fly

You are right the Pistons were part of it but Riley's (great coach) Knicks set the NBA back 7 years or so. This is why they had to do away with the no-zone rule and with it establish the defensive 3 second rule.

35. I think the late 80's pistons team was great
They didn't have stars, or even one stand out player. They were all just really good players who played as a team, and I think that's what's missing in most teams these days. The Lakers were a bit like that too when they had Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul Jabar. I think part of the problem now is that players are just so damn HUGE. Playing the middle of the court has partly disappeared, because the court is relatively smaller to these guys who are 6'5" and 6'8".

19. Right now, Jordan, but Kobe will surpass him
I was able to watch and enjoy the last three Jordan titles, and I've watched all of Kobe's seasons, and now that I think he's found his niche (i.e., Kobe might rattle off 4 or 5 titles with the amount of young talent near him.

I really think he'll end up with 8 titles and maybe 10 appearances total.

Also if Kobe wants, the career scoring title is his for the taking.

but would you think the same way if he rattles off another 4 or 5 titles and another few MVP's? Kobe is in his prime right now, and he'll be in it for another 6 or 7 years.

31. Jordan is in a whole different category than Bryant
Michael was also one of the greatest man-to-man defenders in history... Kobe is usually given the opponent's weakest perimeter player to guard so he won't wear himself out defensively.

40. If you are limiting it to Kobe and Jordan
Edited on Wed Jun-11-08 04:18 PM by dr.strangelove
Then its not even close, Jordan wins. As for others, its close, but Wilt is No. 1 in my book. Kareem is a close No. 3, barely behind Jordan. The next level is the Oscar Robnsons, Magics, Russels and Ervings. All three of these players dominated the league in their day. Kobe probably cracks my top 12. He is one of the top 3 playing right now, but for all time, he just is not there yet. I put Magic, Erving, Shaq, Bird, Russel, Oscar Robinson, Hakeem, and Bob Petit in front of Kobe. but Kobe has easily 5-7 more years of good play in him. If he keeps it up at this level, he could get in the top three. However, I would have said the same thing about Grant Hill seven years ago, but injuies took him from one of the best of all time to a very good, probably top 75-100 all time player. If Kobe gets injured, he won't be in these discussions either.
