1. In Baltimore it is served with the Thanksgiving meal
gigantic German population there.

Ex-Baltimoreans (Mom, for instance) get some really, really strange looks when they bring sauerkraut as a side dish to Thanksgiving (or Christmas, etc.) meals elsewhere in the U.S.

Try it sometime. Its strong acidic content is thought to help with the heavy digestion attendant upon the holiday feast.

15. Could you elaborate on sauerkraut...with turkey?
That sounds intriguing. I bet a cranberry infused sauerkraut would be just wicked...hmmmm

25. It's just served as a side dish
along with the mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and what have you.

I bet a cranberry infused sauerkraut would be just wicked

In our day (mid-'70s), there was no entry for the word "infused" in the Baltimore Dictionary (TM). Now, however, reports are that Charm City might just maybe be ramping upscale just enough that this might be a possibility.

2. Best. Cabbage product. Ever.
The only competition is Kimchi, and my heart still says "kraut" (of course, my heart is clogged with pork fat, so...)

3. It's the Wisconsinite in you. It's in your genes.
It's the same part of your DNA that gives you the irresitable urge to consume beer in large quantities and dance whenever you hear Polka music.

6. Nah, it's the German in me.
I'm originally from Ohio, so the Wisconsinite thing doesn't wash ('course I did pick the right state to move to, what with the beer and brats and kraut and all).

17. Yeah.
Gotta be Bavarian style. The other stuff is just too pungent. Kraut is also supposed to be a good handover medication.

The canned stuff, however, sucks.

19. Restaurants in Germany serve the canned stuff as well
You won´t find a place here that actually does their own, it takes way too long.

23. there are places with homemade kraut left
There are shops with real, fresh Kraut. Better Organic food stores or farm shops usually have it. Even if not: the Organic kraut in jars beats any canned product.

Some restaurants make their own too - it's rare, but not extinct.

... especially with sausage or hot dogs.

But then, I love all acidic foods, pickles, hot mix, etc. Give me vinegar and I'm happy :)

24. Just now appreciating my Kraut-ness
My mom hated the fact that she was German when I was growing up. I "hated" German food because of my inherited attitude from her.

When reprehensor and I got married, we began exploring all sorts of new foods. We had WONDERFUL German food at this place in Madison, Wisconsin, and that's what finally sold me on sauerkraut. Yep, bring on the brats, Hefeweissen and mustard!

Say it once, say it loud, "Ich bin Deutschlanderin!" and I'm proud!
