5. That's my old hometown....
Don't get back there very often, but when I do.. I'm back in love.
There's a grandeur to the city...
its HUGE. Tall buildings... grand in scope.
I remember flying there in the dark of night,
and coming down over the pitch darkness of Lake Michigan,
and there was this glimmer in the distance... this glow of light..
and it was like WonderLand.. all lit up in the darkness,
like jewels strung up in the darkness.

I really miss it.. the little folksy neighborhoods,
the air, the sky, the friendliness of the corner eating joints..

Damn...

10. We flew out around midnight. It was gorgeous.
It was gorgeous down in Grant Park in the evening, and down at the Pier in the fog, and in Uptown in the rain. It was beautiful everywhere and I loved it.

17. That's a great shot... but you asked...
have you ever been there, or basing your question on that photo?

chicago is immense.. huge... wide and deep.If you drive from the northern most
area, to the southern most area, its almost 50 miles deep.
Much of the central city is old- some areas survived that famous Chicago fire.
Especially the general area around the 'loop,'the downtown area. Like all urban areas,
the downtown vicinity is always in flux. These areas south of the loop and lake,
were once stockyards, rail yards (Chicago was the rail center of the USA for years..
all trains went thru the city- as O'Hare airport is the central for air traffic in the USA)
and factories that were reinvented as low income areas; the neighborhoods, as they aged,
went from commercial, to low-rent areas inhabited by lower income folks.
These gradually become blighted, building torn down, thus 'empty lots.'
But like life itself, these areas are re-gentrified, with new developments.

Also, chicago has many parks; many of these appear to be 'empty lots'
on an arial map. Another thing to consider: these 'empty' areas surround
the highways; the state purchased much of this land, as housing values around
the expressways go way down..
