Original message
I made a HUGE mistake today.
After months of avoidance and denial, I weighed myself.

I'm gobsmacked and really disgusted. I haven't been this big since carrying around my belly fruit.

On the plus side, my boobs are humongous. On the bad side, so is my gut.

It's time to do something about it before I'm on You Are What You Eat on BBC America (my new fav show). BTW, how much is a stone?

So you think I should hire a buff boy to be my personal trainer? At least it would motivate me.

31. Crikey, say no! 'Tain't worth it! ROFL!
See, now, what you DO want is Mr. MG to breathe on you--he's lost 14 lbs. with his pneumonia, he's down three pants sizes, and he now only weighs 8 lbs. more than I do. Yes, I hate him, even though he feels like crap and is still coughing after a week and he's halfway through his course of antibiotics.

The kidlet is doing a little better, thanks for asking! He's still unwell, though, but he's functional (playing). He doesn't have much of an appetite, so he eats a few bites of something every couple of hours and then says his stomach hurts. Had a little bit of the big D this morning (if YKWIM) which startled him, as he hasn't had that since he was in diapers. This stomach virus is also teh evil--even though you only go down for the count for about 48 hours, the illness lingers in a minor way for more than a week--maybe two, considering my mom, who had it on Memorial Day, is still icky.

We are all eating a LOT of bread products--actually nothing but bread products--and drinking nothing but water. For the forseeable future. Hmm...maybe I can drop a few more pounds in the meantime...! Trying to look on the bright side, here! :D

My friend in Walworth had it as well (and I haven't seen her lately, so she didn't get it from me), so it's making the rounds. Lots of hand washing till this plague moves on is the best advice I can give you.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'm certainly going to smudge the heck out of this place tomorrow when Mr. MG is back at work (yes, the idiot is going back to work--he must be bored) and MG Jr. is with grandma.

I was riding behind someone (I know better) and they almost drove fast off into a 6-10 foot ditch. Well.. I say almost...

He whipped it to the left to miss the drop, I lost my grip and flew off the 4wheeler right down said ditch.

My bounceback is still good, but gawd the pain hehe.

40. As someone struggling to *gain* weight, I'd advise you to not stress out too much.
There are advantages to having a higher body mass. Also, you have to be careful about taking off the weight; losing too much weight to quickly can have serious health consequences.

The thing is, not a year 1/2 ago I was at the other end of the spectrum. I guess that is what makes it all the harder for me to bear. Of course, I was extremely depressed, drinking too much and borderline anorexic at the time. So I don't want to go back there. The medication I've been on has contributed greatly to my current state. I've just got to figure out how to lose the weight without suffering.

So what advice would you give me? My meds evidently are slowing my metabolism and increasing my appetite. It sucks. I'm doing Pilates once or twice a week, which is keeping me limber but not really doing much for my weight.

45. First
You need to set some *reasonable* goals. You need to assess what is realistic for you to attain w/in a set amount of time. How much time can you dedicate each day or every other day?

Also, without knowing what meds you're taking, if you are considering some sort of physical routine, I'd suggest running it past him/her first.

Are you doing this Pilates in a gym environment or at home?

You also need to take a good look at your diet. One quick way to boost your metabolism immediately is to break your meals into smaller meals, and eat more often. I've always recommended a dietary logbook. Write down everything you eat and drink each day, and at what time you ate it. Also, write down your physical activity for the day (Pilates, walking, etc). Leave it somewhere conspicuous where it can be a constant reminder. If you're honest with your food diary, it can be a great weapon in the battle of the bulge.

Any thoughts either for or against joining a gym?

52. Good advice
I take Pilates class at the gym. I have access to all the machines, but I don't really know how to use them. I know I can ask, but I'm silly shy about stuff like that.

My meds are anti-depressants that are notorious for weight gain. Blerg.

Thanks for your advice flvegan. You are a sweetheart!

In the past I'd have these failed attempts at losing weight because I was too self-conscious of what I was doing. In the end I'd end up binge eating. What I now realise is that you don't have to starve yourself and climb Everest to drop the kilos - walking is effective and there's a lot of appetising food that doesn't come attached with the dreaded guilt tags. I think especially of sushi.
