Critter weekend
Is it critter weekend in Gaithersburg, MD?

Yesterday we found a dead fox in the yard. Animal Control came and got the poor thing.

This morning I found a box turtle on the road, pulled over and put in on the side so it wouldn't get hit. When I drove back that way a half hour later it was sitting exactly where I'd put it, head sticking out with this WTF? look.

About an hour later, as I'm checking out yard sales, a big deer lopes across the street maybe 20 feet in front of me and disappears onto someone's back yard.

Not long after that I pass the carcass of the biggest dead deer I've ever seen, lying on the side of Darnestown Road. Must have taken a Hummer to dispatch that one.

I get home, and the resident chipmunk is scurrying all over the front porch.

What's next? I can hardly bear to imagine.

1. Normal good instincts seem to diminish when
the instinct to reproduce takes over. I've seen (and smelled) many a skunk who never made it to visit the attractive neighbor across the country road, and I suspect your local critters are showing symptoms of spring fever.

2. Hi neighbor!
Live in Germantown..I think it might be the spring thing..but also with the crazy weather we had this week I am sure quite a few animals lost their homes and are in search of better spots...

3. Hey! Hi there!
I live in Derwood, near the Shady Grove Metro, but almost nobody (except Matcom, who grew up in Derwood) has heard of the place.

I think the critters are looking for water, or maybe a cold beer, and who can blame them in this heat.

As for the fox, there's a woman on the street behind mine who FEEDS foxes. Supposedly 6 or 7 of them hang out at her place, and some of the people with kids are concerned about it. This fox might have been hit by a car while going from his den to the chow line, or vice versa.

Have you lived in Germantown for long? Ever been to the Royal Bagel Bakery on 118? It's like heaven for us ex-New Jerseyans.
