3. Back when I was in grad school, I had a problem with people stealing

my yogurt out of the hallway refrigerator.

At that time, Malt-O-Meal was not available on the East Coast, and my mom had sent me some in a care package. Knowing that no one would recognize the multicolored grains, I opened each carton, sprinkled the multicolored grains across the top, and resealed it. I never had any more yogurt disappear. I knew that the grains were harmless, but the thief obviously did not.

I also heard a secondhand story about a college dorm food thief who seemed to live off other people's stuff until some enterprising premed students backed a cake laced with an otherwise harmless chemical that turns a person's urine blue.

They kept waiting for screams from the bathroom... None came, but the theft stopped.

6. Back in the seventies, we had a really nasty solution given by some med school students

There is a harmless dye called methylane blue. You put some in a coke bottle,
and it doesn't change the taste or color at all.

BUT--the guilty parties freak right out when the next time they go to pee: it
comes out bright green. Sends them running in total panic to Student Health,
thinking they have maybe 4 hours to live.........

8. Put a sign on the door: "one of the items in the fridge has been laced with rat poison"

preferably signed by the most psychopathic user of the fridge, to give the claim some realism. It worked.
