Ever shattered an ankle?
I did on Memorial day. Stepped on a slick step the wrong way and dislocated my ankle plus shattered it and I had a compound fracture of my foot. I was in the hospital for 3 days after surgery. It was horrible, the service just sucked and I have insurance. I'm not supposed to put weight on it for another month and I'm on leave from work. I'm thankful that I have short term disability insurance. I've never been this helpless. What an eye opener! I'm so bored during the day that I've started watching All My Children. Catch me up. Why is Erica in jail for the 50th time? :-)

2. All my friends want my pain meds...
I actually have the Rush Limbaugh medication that makes you deaf. :-) Seriously, why do people like pain pills other than the obvious fact that they make you quit hurting. They put me to sleep and if I don't take anti-nausea meds, they make me hurl. Good for weight loss.

4. Sorry to hear that.
Get well soon. I have shattered my pinkie finger though. It doesn't bend anymore even after surgery and rehabilitation.

5. Sorry to hear that.
My son did a high sprain during football last season. Took him about 6 weeks to recover as we chose not to do surgery. The cool thing was that he took it real slow and easy rehabbing, so it healed 100% So take it easy, give it lots of time and do what the PT tells you!

Get well soon.

7. I have
my Sophomore year in HS, the first Football game of the season. Completely shattered it. I required surgery, pins, and a lot of time to heal.

8. Welcome to the club!
I broke my foot at work. I heard the bone break. Called my supervisor and told him. Went to the doc. The doctor said not to stand or walk on it for 4 weeks. When I told my boss she told me I could do what my doctor said or get back to work. I couldn't walk, so I said I had to go with my doctor. And she fired me.

Khash.

9. Yikes! My boss sent me a note that said get well soon
I don't think I can get fired. I paid for this insurance and I'm covered under the family leave disability whatever law. If I do get fired, I think it would be lawsuit city,

10. In 1996 I was carrying my then three year old
out of a medical office when I rounded a corner on the sidewalk and didn't see a raised portion a couple of inches high that was unrepaired earthquake damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake. I went flying, but was determined to hang onto my little one. The result was that my ankle bone cracked in two and dislocated my foot. A passerby called 911 and I was soon on my way to the emergency room - still clutching my toddler. The nearest hospital bandaged the foot and referred me to an orthopedic surgeon nearer to my home. My husband picked me up and drove me over there where it was determined I would undergo surgery the following morning. Then I was sent home. I still can't believe I wasn't immediately admitted. I was in no shape to be at home - extreme pain, if the foot even moved a little bit I thought I was going to pass out. It was the worst night of my life.

I had the surgery the next morning - 18 screws inserted, and sent home the next day. (The service sucked there, too.) I had to be off of the foot for three months and then had two more months of physical therapy before it was remotely back to normal. It's still swollen. How I managed all those months with a three year old I'll never know, but it was a nightmare.

So I have nothing but sympathy for you. I hope you heal quickly and are back on your feet (literally) soon!

13. I was with someone who did
Rock climbing accident. It was pretty bad. Fortunately there were several of us including another party who were on horses. And also fortuante that we had a doctor in our group who had some serious painkillers. Guy suffered the classic roofing accident and shattered a bunch of bones in his ankle/foot.

14. bike wreck
Broke my left ankle in a bike crash when I was a kid. I followed that up by breaking 5 other bones in separate incidents over the next 20 yrs or so. Took me quite a while in life to figure out dangerous stunts weren't worth the price one sometimes pays.

16. Had a friend who did. Ankles are very tricky. My friend was told
to stay off it and she didn't. Two operations later she finally got the message! Be very careful with that ankle!

17. My wife did. A year ago last December.
Slipped on a patch of ice. Compound fracture, dislocation, 2 plates and 11 screws.

She had adjusted well by last Fall, but this past Winter it gave her problems. Soreness, stiffness, etc.

Hang in there and get a physical therapist if you don't already have one.

18. My nephew just did. Playing rugby. They had to screw his growth
plates in his angle which is a pain because if he continues to grow (and he is 16) they'll have to go into his other leg and screw those growth plates down. He's a pretty relaxed kid and took it all in stride. But the poor guy. His summer is shot.

Take care of it and I have no idea why Erica is in jail. I haven't watched All My Children since the mid-80's when she was married to some guy with a wacky twin brother.

22. Only a sprain and THAT was bad enough.
A little over a month ago I fell off my front steps leaving the house to go to my office. The ankle rolled and I thought for sure I had broken it. It hurt so bad I had to sit there for a few minute before I even considered trying to stand up. Literally, when I did stand up I got upright and fell into the back seat of the car. There WAS no way I could put weight on it, and I had no ability to move my foot. Hubby drove me to the ER while I had it iced.

5 X-rays later, the ER determined it was a sprain. I got a lovely air cast, an Ace bandage, crutches, and no pain meds. I also got a very real education about what a dreadful orthopedic patient I am. The second night I woke up and had to go to the bathroom. I managed to limp in there without the crutches, but I was not able to get back to bed...

I am still having problems with pain, but it is much better than it was--it IS healing even if it isn't fast enough to suit me. I still can't wear most of my shoes and I am still swelling by the end of the day.

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. I think I remember you posting in with support when I was on here whining. Made me feel like a complete asshole to be whining when you were in much worse shape than I was.

23. dislocated but not shattered.
Dislocated it when I landed wrong while climbing. 6 weeks later I'm ready to go to the climbing gym and step out my door and dislocate the other one in a gopher hole. I went to the hospital for the first one and the Xrays showed a previous break I didn't even know about.

Sorry for your misfortune. Hope you heal up quick with no residual problems. Can't help you on the AMC question.

24. Like a piece of tempered glass, yes.
Hockey injury in 1979. I was on crutches for eleven weeks and didn't regain any more than half of my previous flexibility.

I can't say for sure I'd have made the NHL if not for this injury (odds are I wouldn't have, of course), but any chance of that happening was gone once that ankle went.
