tell me your definition of an "overprivileged ass"
I have seen that, or a variant, used quite frequently here on DU lately and it is making me think there is a lot of bitterness here regarding the Haves and the Have-Nots, more so than normal anyway.

3. It all depends on context.
It can refer to money, social status, whether you're a minority or not, ect. It just depends on what kind of privilege they're talking about.

4. Unfortunately, given the growing income divide
poor and struggling people have every right to be outraged.

But I doubt that more than a few people here are truly privilaged, just based on normal income distributions. The most I would guess is that some people are doing better than others.

There is certainly no lack of insensitivity here at DU, or any lack of misunderstandings. I hope that despite that people here are able to work together towards some economic goals and politics that really do benefit everyone.

11. I agree
people that are struggling due to circumstances foisted on them have every reason to be outraged.

I am outraged every minute of every day by the circumstances created by the current government.

But, I just saw someone in another thread call someone an "over privileged ass" simply because the person drove an Escalade (caddy SUV) and left their dog in the car.

Perhaps, as some new cars do nowadays, the car, even after shutdown, circulates cool air inside the car for a certain length of time after it is shut off. We certainly don't know the circumstances, and I do not think it is anywhere near enough information to make a judgment like that about a person.

7. that's a good question, for me someone who acts like an over privileged ass
is a person that talks about what they have and generally the cost associated with. Let me give you an example-We have a friend named Pete* and he and wife go to hotel (insert pricey hotel name here) because "It's really expensive!" so they go so they can tell people they stayed there and specifically how much it cost, i'm not sure if he's overprivileged really but since all he talks about is the stuff he owns and how much it cost imo he is an ass. My sister also falls into the same habit/trap and it's just boring.

*Pete-his real name. :D

I hate people like that.

I do know some people that are truly wealthy. The really funny thing about them is they never, or very rarely talk about it. And unless you knew them really well, you would never know. I find that the more people talk, they more likely it is they are mortgaged and financed out the ass to appear as if they are "livin the life"

33. no she never had that time in her life, we had the same parents but 2 totally different upbringings.
The only way i can explain it or make sense of our childhood is this--my parents were convinced that my dear sister hung the moon and the stars so they put there money on her to win, i was kind of the black sheep which in retrospect worked out for me, i've kind of been on my own since my Mom died when i was 17 and it made more self efficient and self reliant, don't get me wrong my husband is a truly wonderful person and i do count on him for moral and emotional support but those things are what makes me happy, him and my daughter, stuff is nice but it isn't the same as a loved one.

63. Oh, I HATE it when people do that.
I had a boss who was always talking like that. He would come sit with us during lunch and "complain" about how much his Mercedes convertible, house in Florida, upgrades to his primary house, etc etc were costing him. He knew how much we all made. I found it to be really ugly.
Oh, and he had horrible taste. He actually bought one of those Thomas Kinkade paintings that Thomas Kinkade actually painted something on, then bragged about how much he paid for it (high 5 figures) and complained about how much it was costing him to ship it from Hawaii. :eyes:

Other people who get under my skin - people who constantly brag about their material things. Constantly. Like it defines them. Ugh.

65. yeah, it's all they bring to the table and the sad thing is that there is probably much
more to the person than that bs but for some reason, maybe some inferiority complex, they can't get past the stuff. It's like my sister, guess what, if she had nothing i'd love her and i've tried to let her know that but i don't it's sunk in that she has value as a person. As for Pete, his wife is just as bad if not worse.

Neoclassical Econ is for suckers. I just read a great piece on Burma and how the situation there is reflective in many ways of the global situation, and the inability of the Dem candidates to speak up about the obscene inequality in wealth distribution, both internationally and domestically. I would post it, but...I don't think many on DU would appreciate it. Not moderate enough. :P

If I rented that place (not that I ever would) I would put about 45-50 people in there crashing on sleeping bags, couches, and sharing beds. With 50 people it would be about 260 per person for the week which is certainly cheaper than a hotel room for a week. But seriously, I can't fathom why anyone would dish out the money for a place that nice when you're just going there for a week and you're going to trash it anyway.

who, after grad school, moved to Berlin for a year, and asked me to come. I explained that I couldn't just move to Berlin, because doing that would cost money, especially since I wouldn't be able to live there legally. He had suggested me moving to Berlin as an alternative to moving back in with my parents and getting a job.

Or my other friend who, when my car was broken down and I was looking for new (used) cars, suggested that I get a BMW, because that's what she drives, and it's a really nice car.

51. I dont know all the circumstances of this incident
but I have left my dog in the car once, and only once and it was only for a few minutes, and I was also never out of sight of him or the car. I even left it running so the AC was left on. I was picking up new tires and wheels and he liked to run around and come back on his own terms. I did not have time for that and he also loved going for car rides.

I don't think I did anything cruel, and in fact got one of the greatest pictures of him ever during the event.

There will always be events outside our control, but the likelihood of something so horrible happening it would keep me from getting back to the car are infinitesimally minimal.
