For one of my graduate history classes I am writing a review/commentary of a wonderful book by Wilma King titled: THE ESSENCE OF LIBERTY; FREE BLACK WOMEN DURING THE SLAVE ERA.
I took the title from this quote by Sojourner Truth: "We
will have our rights -
see if we don't!" I gave my paper the title:
"See if we don't!" I am nowhere near finished, but I thought I would post the first paragraph here for your comment.
Here is the first paragraph. I would appreciate your comments (be kind :) )
Sojourner Truth’s famous rallying cry echoes from every page of Wilma King’s amazing study of free black women in the North and South prior to the Civil War. King taps into the voices of myriad strong souls who battled racial, gender, and economic discrimination, to tell a story of courage and hope. Through these pages, their voices resolutely answer the false but persistent message of every era that we cannot bring about changes to the political and societal status quo. Truth’s cry is especially fervent in a year in which we have the opportunity to elect the first African American President of the United States … See if we don’t!
