Pot comes from an entirely different plant, and the drug itself has quite different properties.

Pot is an opiate. It may not be the same chemically, but it is a pain killer, and in heavier dosages is not so dissimilar to opium.... "disfunctionlly enebriated" comes to mind.. :-)

Myself i see drugs in 4 categories:

1. stupid: PCP, cigarettes and heavy alcohol
2. halucinogens: LSD-25R, Mescaline, Psilopsybin, Lysergic acid amides, etc... etc...

3. Opiates: Pot, and all mentioned in this thread.

4. speed: caffeine, cocaine, crystal meth, etc.. etc...

Category 1, does little but shorten your life.
Category 2, can be quite profound, especially in nature (empty deserts, beaches and natural places)
Category 3, worst case, you fall asleep... and worst worst case you get addicted and will suffer reentry burns.... actually worst worst worst case under american-prohibition: you catch AIDs and Hepatitis C from dirty shared needles (all unnecessarily, a victem of malice in the white hous)
Category 4... honestly the least understood of the lot. Outside of addiction, the benefits are ??? staying awake, while deeply asleep in cultural illusion... ?

Pot is an opiate by the effects of the THC drug coctail.

4. Raw opium, no derivatives

Comes in a hard pink rock. Chop it up and roll it with weed into a joint or put it on top of a bowl of weed. That other stuff is too dangerous even for this reckless hedonist.

I am in no way advocating that anyone pursue this activity.

I don't know how available raq opium is in other parts of the US, but my city has a large population of immigrants from Vietnam and Laos.

13. I once had the pleasure of smoking raw opium...

with a member of the "Hell's Angels" motorcyle association, in Ocean City, Maryland. This would have been 1979. I was 15. And, obviously, hanging out with the "wrong crowd." Anyway, it was either opium or PCP---he DID give me the choice. I believe I chose wisely, in retrospect. But that shit got me so high I couldn't move for a day. And I never tried it again. The only time I've been that "out of it" has been during surgery. Needless to say, after that, I stuck to the harmless drugs: Valium, 'ludes, speed, pain-killers, pot, coke, booze and tobacco.

And I'm a better man for it!

Demerol is the gift of the gods when you're in real pain. I've never had anything send me to never-never land the way a Demerol shot did. Man, a person could develop a problem with that stuff!

And methadone most definitely has intoxicating properties, with less of the nausea that many other opiates produce.
