Poll question: Favorrite M*A*S*H Character
I only had room for ten choices, but there are so many others. If your favorite isn't listed, add a reply.

1. Hey, you can change one
to "other".

I always loved that crazy gung-ho officer who would show up rather infrequently but he was hilarious!

5. Why Col. Potter?
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 01:47 PM by Stevendsmith
He was an uptight old curmudgeon. Col. Blake was cool, and he was one of the guys--hittin' the booze with Hawkeye and Trapper.

8. The Opposite Opinion Here
Blake wasn't cool, he was a doofus. Potter came in as uptight regular army but mellowed as he saw the skills and humanity in his staff. His character evolved. Blake was a doofus in the first episode, and continued to be a doofus throughout Stevenson's tenure. Boring stuff, to me.

15. Potter had the great gift of knowing
when to be "regular army", i.e. impose necessary discipline and order so work could get done, and when to let his hair down or take a pass on the hijinks.

I wish, oh how I wish I could work for a Sherman Potter in my lifetime. I've never met one though. *sigh*

7. My faves, in this order:
Frank Burns - one of the best sitcom roles, ever. Period.

Henry Blake - "every year, Tank Washington comes around my house and shoots out the porch light. And he's a judge now"

Colonel Flagg - "There's only one thing wrong with that theory. They only do two shows at the Sands on Saturday. I was a show girl for six weeks".

Trapper John - just the right amount of attitude without the smug sanctimony of Hawkeye. And easy on the eyes, too!

BJ Hunnicutt - "I was named after my mother, Bea, and my father, Jay."

Klinger - "I'll never give up the Klinger collection!"

Col. Potter - "mule fritters!"

Radar - "Your permission to cover up my nakedidity, sir?"

Father Mulcahy - "jocularity, jocularity!"

Maj. Houlihan - she changed quite a bit during her tour in Korea.

Maj. Winchester-pompous, but true to character.

Hawkeye Pierce - nearly a complete jackass, in every way. Can hardly stand to watch him.

9. I voted for Winchester, and here's why..
Edited on Thu Feb-19-04 02:21 PM by unidentifiedbassplay
Check out the series of final M*A*S*H episodes, where (as the Wikipedia puts it):

"Dr. Winchester befriended a rag-tag bunch of Chinese musicians and taught them to play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Quintet for Clarinet and Strings". However he later saw all the musicians killed and as a result classical music, his number one solace during the war, became unpalatable to him."

I maintain: If you're a musician and that segment doesn't make you tear up, then you ain't got the blues.

12. Charles had one of the best lines in the history of the show:
Charles: Sir, my father knows Harry Truman. He doesn't like him, but he knows him.
Col. Potter: Fine, you have dad call Harry, then have Harry call me, and then we will work something out. In the mean time, vamoose.
Charles: Yes, sir, I am... vamoosing. But know this. You can cut me off from the civilized world. You can incarcerate me with two moronic cellmates. You can torture me with your thrice daily swill, but you cannot break the spirit of a Winchester. My voice shall be heard from this wilderness and I shall be delivered from this fetid and festering sewer.

10. Hawkeye was dreamy
Can I swoon and act stupid here? I *love* Hawkeye, always will. The little boy -- The conscience -- The joker -- A perennial non-violent hero. Alright, there was the womanizing, but IMO he was just over-compensating for a)no mother and b)raging bisexual tendencies we could all see very clearly. :-)

14. Col. Flagg - famous quotes inside
Nobody leaves till I do and I never do.

My father touched me that way once, to this day he still has to wear orthopedic shirts.

We've got files on people who haven't even been born.

Colonel Flagg: Have you ever heard of the Malaysian Chest Implosion Torture?
Radar: No.
Colonel Flagg: That's because it hasn't been invented... yet.

You think you're real smart. But you're not smart; you're dumb. Very dumb. But you've met your match in me.

"I have nothing to do with intelligence."

I find myself quoting that line a lot these days.

35. Hawkeye for sure
That character had the best lines.

"I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-train. I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down"

this one applies to Bush and his stupid Iraqi war

"I just don't know why they're shooting at us. All we want to do is bring them democracy and white bread. Transplant the American dream. Freedom. Achievement. Hyperacidity. Affluence. Flatulence. Technology. Tension. The inalienable right to an early coronary sitting at your desk while plotting to stab your boss in the back. That's entertainment."

I feel that if we had more military people like Hawkeye, we wouldn't be where we're at.

"I will not carry a gun, Frank. When I got thrown into this war I had a clear understanding with the Pentagon: no guns. I'll carry your books, I'll carry a torch, I'll carry a tune, I'll carry on, carry over, carry forward, Cary Grant, cash and carry, carry me back to Old Virginia, I'll even 'hari-kari' if you show me how, but I will not carry a gun!"
