3. ChuckToddFact.com
I love her too and usually agree with her on most topics. I love to see her and Morning Joe tangle when they are on Race to the White House together. LOL

She needs a wardrobe makeover though. She wears that black jacket with the white stitching WAY too much.

It will not be so apparent you are pushing it then. Having it in your sig line is enough. Just a thought.

and he got pissed and tore off his microphone and left during the commercial? I saw that, but can't recall what program that was.

I do recall that I was delighted about her handing him his ass on a plate, and he could not handle it, LOL!

We were hoping that Rachel would take over that timeslot, and she still may... It does appear that they've made up, since I've seen them together since and they were friendly, but that sure was one for the books...:D

However, I do have a small problem with her. Agree that she would look just a little less drab if she chose some lighter colors and a tiny bit more face makeup and color on her lips.

I know that she is gay and appears to be more "butch" than "lipstick lesbian" -- not a terrible look, but kind of harsh in high definition. She also has a couple of dark spots on her neck which could be covered by make-up. Does she wear earrings or any jewelry? I think Ellen DeGeneres has less of a problem because her blonde hair and blue eyes -- and the light colors she wears -- always look nice. And the woman she wants to marry on Bush's ranch? Wow, she is beaming!

10. She's adorable as she is.
Lots of women, of all orientations, just aren't especially girly looking, just like some men aren't especially macho. Trying to glam her up would be silly. There are so many interchangably beautiful newsreaders of no particular talent, it's nice to see somebody who's on the show first and foremost for her brains, yet still looks great in a realistic and approachable way.

FWIW, she looks fine on a 65" HD set. Some of the more plastic newsreaders and actors, OTOH, look like creations of Dr. Frankenstein.

I place a lot more emphasis on intelligence, brains, and personality, and not so much on a fem or a "girly girl". I do sort of gravitate to the "tweeners", some college education, and I WILL NOT KISS a republican!

She is an attractive woman, and a wonderful speaker, with a brilliant mind. She possesses smooth skin, great hair, and a fabulous wit.

Lefty Mom, I don't want to fight. I wasn't looking for feminine glamour, or to make her look "dumbed down" -- or even to mention this. It was just something I was thinking the last couple of times I saw her.

55. Hi Dogtown! It was wonderful! Thanks for your kind message today!
I made a couple of telephone calls to my 1st cousin, Evan, born on June 1, who is planning on driving out here from Philadelphia in September 2008.

Also, I called a woman I worked with in Massachusetts more than a decade ago. She now spends summers in Maine and winters in Cape Coral, Florida. Born on 6/01/30! She told me she was 77 and I laughed! I had to tell her their is information on the Internet that she was born in 1930... but doesn't use the Internet herself. She seemed amazed that I could pull up that information so quickly, and added, "I don't even know where I put my birth certificate."

She and her husband are well and enjoying their retirement. I haven't spoken with her since my mother passed away in 1991, but the conversation didn't lag for a minute. What a joy!

30. Unfortunately, TV and motion pictures require something extra.
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 12:14 AM by Radio_Lady
This is not a POWER THING or a lesbian or a beauty thing or even a choice... it is a fact that motion pictures and television really require both men AND women to wear makeup.

If you are not into it, fine. Walk around with your natural face, but please don't make it a FEDERAL case out of this and tell me how HAWT she looks. In those two pictures, she looks like a young boy to me.

Sorry, kiddo, I'm not your mother. My stepkids don't wear makeup -- they're in their forties now. Furthermore, for a very long time, they didn't shave their armpits or legs.

I'm from a different generation. I was "seduced by Max Factor" at a young age and I admit it. It's a choice if you're just a woman walking around without make-up, who cares? However, scrutiny by a camera turns it into a much different thing.

Thanks for listening.

Peace, love and happiness,

Radio Lady in Oregon

would no doubt make you less cranky.

"... and I love Rachel Maddow. However, I do have a small problem with her. Agree that she would look just a little less drab if she chose some lighter colors and a tiny bit more face makeup and color on her lips." THIS is what has you incensed.

Radio_Lady said, "...I love Rachel Maddow", and then she proceeded to voice a thought that perhaps Rachel would look even better if she made some subtle changes to her on-air makeup. How DARE she even think such thoughts, let alone actually print them on DU! Right? I mean, as you said, "I can't believe how incredibly condescending people are when commenting about how a woman would look 'nicer' in their eyes if she did this or that to themselves ." How ridiculous can we get here?

I think Shirley Manson is hot. OK? So far, so good. Now, pay attention to this next thing I'm going to say about this woman I "claim" to think is hot. Brace yourself, cause here it comes: I think Shirley Manson looked NOT hot as a blond, and I was glad when she dropped that look. Incredibly condescending, aren't I? How dare I comment on the appearance of a celebrity. How "incredibly condescending".

I don't come here to DU looking to get pissed off. I come here looking for some reassuring sanity, but lately I'm really starting to get fed up with all the absurd over-sensitivity that seems to be on the increase around here. This utter nonsense is a good example of what I mean. You even managed to make some kind of fucking weird association with racism and homophobia for Christ's sake.

I didn't say Rachel Maddow would look better with lipstick but, if I did, I now know that would be incredibly condescending to you. Knowing that makes me wonder what you'd call it if I suggested that the impacted cranks around here are in dire need of a big enema followed by a daily regimen of Metamucil. Would that be like a "murerous statement" or something?

Metamucil is a safe and effective fiber supplement that will make you feel more comfortable and relaxed. When you're comfortable and relaxed comments about Rachel's and Shirley's lipstick and hair color won't make your blood boil. Don't worry, it won't make you some kind of spaced out zombie. You'll still be able to get upset about things that matter. It'll just help keep you from getting upset about things that don't fucking matter at all. You'll understand what is "incredibly condescending" and what isn't. For example, what Radio_Lady said isn't. What I'm saying to you is. And yes, you and quite a few others "should loosen up". This kind of overbearing and stupid political correctness is a symptom of the same disease that makes right wingers consider any criticism of the administration to be unpatriotic and un-american. It's stupid and it's despicable, and I'm sick of it.

25. I think she's pretty as is.
And I personally don't understand what butch and femme have to do with it. I do understand that most masculine leaning lesbians tend not to wear makeup, but I don't think you can judge based just on that. My girlfriend, if we had to pick genders, would be the "male" and I would be the "female," but she's far more likely to wear any sort of makeup, mostly because she's far more vain and particular about how she looks. I'm not a slob by any means, but I've never "got" the whole appeal of cosmetics, and I'm far more laid back and casual than she is.

However, I would guess that Maddow wears, at the very least, a bit of concealer on camera. Even male stars get "made up" before being on a show, even if it is a bare minimum.

61. What is REALLY important is that her diction and vocabulary are fantastic!
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 09:46 AM by Radio_Lady
She's LIBERAL and ASSERTIVE. She has NO REGIONALISMS. I could listen to her for hours.

Frankly, I'm not here to judge anyone on the outside. However, there is JUST NO WAY at the Democratic Underground to prove to people that what you feel on the inside -- and do in your REAL LIFE -- is more important than what you say on this site.

I've been wearing make-up for decades. I started out on television in 1957. I had acne pretty bad, but covered it up with Max Factor pancake makeup. I was very sensitive to how my skin looked for the black and white, Image Orthicon cameras. It was an era when women wore much heavier makeup. At that time, the only gay woman I knew was one of my high school friends, whose family I practically joined when I was left alone in the afternoon.
Last time I visited with her in New England, she and her SO were so happy and had been living together for decades.

All I knew at the time was that Gretchen was very athletic, excelled at everything she did academically and in sports, wore her hair short, and never used makeup. I found out later that she was gay, as was her younger brother. Regrettably, her brother jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge years ago, probably impelled by his disaffection with society's acceptance. It hit her family very hard.

There is NO HOMOPHOBIA here. I believe that sexual identity is inborn. I have had dozens of gay and lesbian guests on my radio program. I frequently argue their case with my conservative friends. Just met a gay couple right down the street (due to an email through our homeowners' association regarding placement of a foreigh student for next year). One of them is going to give me a bid on painting my downstairs bathroom.

Not only did I work in television and theater, but then moved on to call on male and female hairdressers in Boston for almost ten years. But how can I get you to believe me and stop calling people these awful names and implying there is some prejudice? It's just my opinion, that's all.

Peace, love and happiness, (Our sign-off on the Miami, Florida children's show which ran from 1957 to 1979. I was on at the beginning when there were only MEN on the air. Both sexes wore short hair and lots of makeup. There was only one other woman on that station at the time, Jackie Pierce, who did a homemaking show.)

First job at WTVJ (1957-1958)

Second job as first woman talk show host with a full-time call in program in Boston.
Frankly, I think I have a face for radio!

We come to the present experience with our past experience.

I like Rachel also and I think she is actually very beautiful. The contours of her face are lovely. Her short haircut is actually very graceful.

She does seem to have monochromatic clothes. I can't understand why a little color wouldn't be in order, tho.

I think her skin is fabulous. It looks translucent to me, quite beautiful.

12. She needs her own program on MSNBC
Rachel is very talented but right now she's also incredibly overrated. I realize no one else shares that view but this is a slanted message board. On a network program to survive and be respected for years you need a threat of balance and right now Rachel is woefully lacking.

In that program where she supposedly destroyed Scarborough, he actually was rightfully dismissive of her because Rachel spent the early portions of that show insisting Democrats were destroying their chances in the fall, her familiar fearful blather. Scarborough understands the big picture and he ridiculed Rachel for her over reactive focus, emphasizing that Bush's approval ratings and Iraq and the economy, etc. were far more November relevant than a couple extra months of a primary battle.

Rachel was so stunned that her simpleton "McCain is the beneficiary, blah, blah, blah" angle was being challenged that she was determined to load up on Scarborough later on. You could see the look on her face. That's all that happened. She's used to going unchallenged on partisan radio but on balanced TV it's a different game. It's the most ineptly analyzed segment in recent TV history.

Once she gets her own show and realizes she doesn't have to tilt every second of every show toward the far left viewpoint, and in fact she'll be less effective if she does, Rachel will improve markedly.

To be honest, I wish she were my friend or my girl-friend or my wife or my sister or my neighbor or....well I just REALLY REALLY wish I knew her in person. That BRILLIANT mind, that biting wit and those two tiny moles on the side of her silky smooth neck... This woman is the whole package and a lot more!

If I have a single criticism: She sometimes wears a dark jacket live on Kieth Olbermann with what appears to be white stitching or embroidery on the collar...it looks sooooo K-Marche'! I have no issue with K-Mart but this jacket looks so damned tacky on my goddess Rachel.

It appears that her TV career may be taking off...I hope it grows, I hope she gets her own show someday. I believe she is talented enough to make the jump from radio to the small screen but then, I may be a bit biased.

24. I agree with you about that jacket
She needs to stick to the snazzy pinstripes. Although I prefer her in her natural couture.

Jeans and a tee-shirt. :loveya:

27. I've never noticed the dark jacket you are referring to.
I'll make a special effort to look for it.

I guess I've always been focused on her face and personality, and "crushing" on her. :)

...what I really want is to go out and share a few beers with her. You know, hang out and yap.

32. I could "hang out and yap", or go for dinner and conversation too.
But I sure wouldn't mind if she ate crackers in my bed, if ya know what I mean.

39. I'm female and straight
And I have a crush on her! I think she's great just the way she is: it's so refreshing to have a real woman up there commenting on the news, instead of the bleached-and-blow-dried clones most of the MSM try to foist on us.

I would like to get her to switch sides. :) But I think I have a better shot at getting the Dem nomination this year.

40. Hell, I have a crush on half of MSNBC's political lineup.
Girl crushes on Rachel and Norah O'Donnell, and a full-on geek crush on Chuck Todd. And Keith. There's always Keith, too.

51. I don't exactly have a crush on Rachel, LOL, but I agree that she's the best on the air...
She is not only intelligent, with a knowledge and understanding of what's going on in this country, but she presents it all with such clarity. We listen to her Air America radio show and pay attention whenever she's on KO or Dan Abrams. It's just a matter of time before she has her own show on MSNBC...:-)

62. ... I love her for her mind, ideas, laugh and her smile. I would love to spend time with her.
Is that a crush?

Signed,

RL Thrice-married, straight, 69 year old female who has never had a homosexual experience, but wonders what it would be like, especially when my husband is being a REAL jerk.

There was this one gal in Boston... while we were having a beer after work, I told her I'd always loved blondes with blue eyes, male or female. If I had had any urges towards women, it would be to someone who was like her. Then, we both went home to our male companions.
