I am moving and I have to give up one of my cats and my dog (temporarily)
I can only take one (it will be Cokie, I have had her since she was 4 months old).

So I have to give up Picasso, who I adopted 2+ years ago.

Corey will be staying with friends until I get settled in my new apartment (no more utilities except electric, no more lawn mowing, no more snow shoveling, no more fixing things that broke because the landlord is a scumbag). I can have her, but I think the immediate move will be too much for her so she will be with friends who also have an English Bull Terrier.

So if any of my New Jersey friends/members (I do have friends) here want to adopt a great cat, I would rather he go to one of you than have to go to the shelter. And he is a pisser. And a bud (he is laying next to me on my desk as I type this).

1. Can you negotiate with the landlord to keep him?

Maybe agree to a higher deposit?

BUT... before you ask the landlord, ask other renters who have pets there what the "unofficial" policy is. If the complex is pet friendly, sometimes the policy re: pets over the size or number limit is "don't ask - don't tell." I had an extra pet in an apartment complex like that once. Well, even a few extra pets when I was fostering. It's worth a try anyway.

Good luck!

4. One cat one dog, period. I wish I could keep him.
It was SO HARD finding apartments that allowed cats and dogs in the first place.

6. I would say, still ask around to the other renters as to whether there is an "unofficial" policy.

You might be surprised.

Also, check your PM in a sec.

8. I did, they are very strict, it is a huge complex
I had to pay a $200 non-refundable "pet" deposit on top of regular security to have the cat, and had to prove she was spayed too. I will have to pay another $200 when I bring my 'old lady' after I move.

2. you can't have Picasso, too?
Edited on Wed May-28-08 05:45 PM by Flaxbee
I hope you can find a good home - don't take him to a shelter - they're overwhelmed with people giving up pets b/c of foreclosures.

I hope someone in NJ or NY or nearby can take him in! We're in NC with 7 cats already, or else I'd do it...

Have you posted this in the pets forum, too?

on edit: if you have to go the shelter route, are there ones near you that are no-kill?

5. Yes, there is one I have talked to that is absolutely no kill
even for a 12 year old fat cat like Picasso.

7. It's been a bad couple of years for my furbabies
I lost Binx my elder cat on October the 13th of 2006, and my Buddah crossed the bridge on December 27th last year. I had 14 cats and 3 dogs at one time in my life only 25 years ago, and they have all passed on and only been replaced with Binx and Buddah and Cokie the tortoise shell mush, and Picasso who sent me vibes one day when I was driving by Petsmart.

Sorry your dog is a 'pisser'. My old girl is real good at holding her bladder. 'Cept if she has to go #2, she goes into the bathroom and does it on the rug by the toilet.

She is a smart old girl. My Bude would cross his legs and wouldn't go under any circumstances even if I didn't come home for 12 hours. When I had my tumor out, he would not get off the couch for 2 days until my friends finally coaxed him with a treat and then he went outside willingly after that, but has to have that treat from then on till he passed on.

17. Go to YahooGroups.com.
Put in a search for pet rescue groups in your area. You can post at their sites. You will have to register, but I found homes for 3 kittens through a couple of the groups.

18. I once moved to an apt that had a strict 1 pet only rule. I had 2 cats- 1 gray and 1 white
Edited on Thu May-29-08 11:14 AM by electron_blue
I knew it would be only for a few months, and I knew I woudln't let the cats be destructive or get out, and there was a pet deposit required, so... I broke the rule... I claimed I only had one cat and under description I wrote "gray and white". I figured at any given moment there would only be one cat in the window and given my description it would take them a few months to figure it all out. And no harm was done to the apt.

I'm just sayin'....

20. Yeah, my apt had a "strict" two pets under 35 lbs. max rule.

I had three kitties. Figured there would never be all three kitties in a window at the same time, and I knew they would run and hide if a maintenance worker ever had to enter the apt when I wasn't there. They were good kitties: quiet, non-destructive and litter trained.

I took my chances, and stayed there for years. Never had a problem. Same with some of my neighbors, and there were a number of dogs there who were well over 35 lbs. I can tell you. It was a big apartment complex, and it turns out that nobody really paid attention or cared whether someone else was violating the pet policy unless a pet caused damage or problems for other tenants.

So glad I kept my "extra" baby.

21. Well, I may have to leave him with friends temporarily
and risk skirting the wrath of the people there. I have two weeks before I start to move, so I am hopeful.

need to be with you.

If you were close to us, we'd take that grey cat in a flash.

Fingers are crossed that it all works out for all of your family.
