1. Oh yeah....
I was standing in the cockpit door years ago, saying goodbye to the passengers as they deplaned. One lady stopped, looked me in the eye, and said, "thanks for not killing us."

Without even thinking, I replied, "We'll try harder next time."

She stomped off in a huff. I worried for months about the possible fallout, but I never heard a word about it.

5. Oh...I have to tell you this story (bearing no ill will towards pilots
because I know they get screwed over with shifts and hours and all)...

Last February, we were flying home from Houston. To get back home, we had to fly Houston to Atlanta to Chicago to Detroit.

The flight from Chicago was delayed due to winds. They put on us on the plane after an hour delay...and we sat for an hour. So they put in videos for us and we sat...and sat...

and then the stewardess came on and said the delay was due to a "staffing problem"...

...and we sat...

...and then the stewardess came on and said,"Actually, our pilots are still in the air and should be here within 15 minutes..."

and so we sat...

...and then the pilot and copilot arrived and we all applauded them, sincerely, because Ohare is known for delays and it's not really the pilots' faults.

And then this idiotic stewardess comes on and says,"You should all be really grateful because these pilots have been flying for over their limit and are tired and just want to get home...I mean, they are exhausted. So you make sure to thank them for doing this for you as you leave the plane tonight..."

I turned to the woman next to me and said,"Thank them for taking our lives into their exhausted hands???" Those very smart pilots stayed in the cockpit as we left the plane that night...and I wonder what happened to that stewardess.

On the plus side, that was the quickest Chicago to Detroit flight I have ever taken.

14. The pilots did a great job of getting us there and I know it's a tough
job so I usually roll with the deals and delays but that was so damned not funny (but funny in hindsight, now that I am here on the ground).

Thanks for the job you do. :toast:

39. Pilots are prohibited by FAA regulations and their union contracts
from flying more than a certain specific number of hours per day, so the flight attendant might have been overstating the situation. Pilots can also refuse to fly if they are fatigued because they know fatigue can be a safety problem. I assume the initial "staffing problem" had to do with the original crew timing out and then having to wait for the second crew. But the second crew couldn't have flown at all if they'd exceeded their legal duty day, and airlines set these schedules very carefully. So the situation wouldn't have been as dire as it seemed. Maybe the FA was just trying to make the passengers feel some sympathy for the crew so they wouldn't be mad.

as you will try better to provide her with a smoother flight next time. (I'm assuming that her comment was a criticism of your piloting skills.)

13. Can't recall anything unusual about the flight
She was apparently glad to get where she was going in one piece, but I still think a stupid comment deserves an equally stupid reply.

41. Did you ever see the bit on the Letterman show
where he was interviewing audience members, one of whom was a flight attendant from (I think) United, and he asked her about her job -- and she said: "Passengers are the enemy!"

I heard she got fired the next day.

15. For me (and maybe for you),
Edited on Wed May-28-08 03:18 PM by Finnfan
I'm normally so good at keeping my emotions in check (and my opinions to myself) that when I do let them out it's almost always disasterous. I'm considered the "nice guy" in real life, so people seem a little taken aback when I get angry, emotional and irrational.

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about how to have and express opinions without alienating people in the process. I'll let you know when I find the answer.

11. When I was an intern at a law firm...
....we were doing a deposition of a man in a products liability suit who said his grill had flared up and severely burned him.

He was talking about after he had been burned and he was being airlifted to the hospital, and one of the EMS personnel said to him, "This guy is going to need a priest to give him last rites. He's not going to make it."

And at that point, and I have no idea why, I laughed. I didn't laugh because it was funny. I laughed out of a reaction to the statement because it was so horrific to even think about. It was so outrageous. It was very weird.

And the client then gave me a look I would never forget. And I felt very, very bad.

That firm didn't hire me as an attorney after I graduated. To this day, I think that this may have been the reason why.
