Have you ever used Metamorphix's dog DNA test?
Have you found it to be accurate? I got Reba's results back. Remember, I always wanted to know her breeds. For some reason, there is no Primary.

Her results:

Secondary: Golden Retriever
In The Mix: Miniature Schnauzer, Akita, Chow Chow, Shar-Pei

No Shepherd, which surprised me!

1. I have a friend who did it

for her dog, which looks like a little lab/border collie mix. Those breeds came back in there, but so did Leonberger...! :wtf:

So i am skeptical! :D

Nevertheless, it would still be fun to try for my Elmo, a mystery "terrier mix".

4. Aww, what a pretty girl

I can definitely see the golden retriever... but mini schnauzer???

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. :( Sounds like she had a long and happy life though.

6. Thanks! She was the best dog. The Schnauzer took me by surprise
I can see the Akita (she weighed over 110 pounds.) If in there, the Schnauzer size genes certainly didn't come into play.

7. Wow, that is big!

Our new addition Simon is supposedly a mini-schnauzer/dachshund mix -- the shelter supposedly knew this for a fact. But he looks *nothing* like a dachshund, except maybe for the big ears! The funny thing is, if anything, he is unusually tall and long-legged, and he's already (at 5 months) bigger than both a mini-schnauzer and a dachshund!

So yeah, those genes can be funny things. :D

Here's Simon:

9. Adorable - I just got a new puppy
Gordon, which we know is a Golden Retriever/Poodle mix. He is sweet, but he does a lot of puppy nipping. Has your puppy done a lot of puppy nipping? Reba played hand game, but she never bit down. She was so gentle with people and disliked other dogs. I think she might have been scared of other dogs from her experience at the pound, and she tried to act tough.

13. Bailey, my supposed Springer/Golden Retriever mix
nipped CONSTANTLY as a puppy.

Damn that dog was a pain in the ass... I really thought for a while there that it wasn't going to work out... but he mellowed out and now, at 2 years old, sleeps on the porch most of the day. :P

14. Simon isn't too bad about nipping

He is actually a really well-behaved pup, except for some mischief if we leave him alone. Yesterday he managed to chew through his harness, which i'm sure was a great victory for him. ;) He also seems to think that newspapers and magazines are really tasty - but so far he hasn't chewed up anything we really care about! (Knock on wood!)

How old is Gordon? I wouldn't worry if he's still very young - i think usually they grow out of that behavior. It may also ease up once he finishes teething.

Now we need puppy pics! :D

15. I have some pictures of Gordon
He's only 3 months old, so I won't worry about the hand chewing and nipping. We keep the magazines and newspapers elevated. He seems to be a good natured, intelligent dog. I'll never replace Reba, but it seems I got a great dog in Gordon.

Here's Gordon:

16. OMG! I just want to pick him up and squeeze him!

What a total cutie-pie! :loveya:

Of course he'll never replace Reba, but a house without a dog is just too empty! And i'm sure you love him for the great dog he is. :)

2. BTW
It's sad that I got the results back after Reba's death, but at least I know have some closure about this. She lived almost 12 years, which is about right considering her breeds.

11. I didn't even know that anything like that existed
Fascinating. I'm definitely going to take a look. I'm skeptical, because I was under the impression that all dogs were more or less the same - I thought a lot of the difference had to do with when genes are "activated" in utero that determined appearance - any scientists who can help me out here?

My girlfriend and I are always wondering what sort of crazy mix our lovely Pepper pup is. The best guesses include pit bull, lab, some sort of shepherd, pointer, collie, boxer.... vets will write down what the mix is for "mixed breed" on various forms (lots of forms needed when moving a dog around the world), and no two vets have made the same guess.

12. Half the dogs in Redding would go unidentified...
They don't have Queensland Heeler/Australian Cattle Dog as part of the mix. :P
