38. Guinness had the traditional ACL surgery....
Edited on Wed May-28-08 12:16 AM by Hobarticus
His ACL had completely torn by the time he had surgery. It had torn slightly last summer, and doctor and I nursed it along hoping it would heal but eventually it just gave.

I have to admit, it was really, really hard to see him in such pain. This is a dog that has never complained or fussed, and he was crying that first night. Broke my heart.

He had that wrap on his leg to stabilize the joint and to keep him from fooling with his staples. They had accidentally shaved his other haunch, first, so at least they matched!

When you go, take someone along if you can, or bring his travel kennel, to immobilize him and keep him calm. He'll start to feel the sedative wear off, and it won't be pretty. Guinness went berserk, and I only had to drive a few blocks.

Guinness sleeps in our bed upstairs, so I prepared a soft nesting bed for him in the living room, then I laid out a sleeping bag and slept next to him. Kept him at ease and that way I could keep an eye on him.

That first night, he was really disoriented from the sedative, from having his leg immobilized, and from the gradually increasing pain. I kept him at rest as much as possible. They gave me enough painkillers for the first day.

Doctor will tell you, no jumping (even up onto low furniture) or climbing more than a few stairs at all that first week. With the jumping, it's not so much the jumping up, it's the landing when they come back down.

I would take him outside on a leash for poop and potty, something new for him. He wasn't in any shape to go tearing off anyway, but it was more to comfort him and be close at hand if he needed help up the four stairs onto our front porch.

After your follow-up visit with your vet a few days later, they will recommend light stretching exercises that you can do to flex the joint a little. They may also suggest very short walks that work up to longer walks. At first, it was all Guinness could do to walk to the sidewalk and go maybe ten feet up the sidewalk and back. Within a week, we were taking a slow walk around the block, and within a few weeks we were back on our standard walk.

I really let Guinness guide me with his rehab. He's a smart dog, and he was very tentative, so I trusted him to know better than to re-injure himself. When he wanted to take a longer walk, or wanted to cut it short, we did. Some days we made progress, some days we took it easy. I was patient with him and it paid off. We have two dogs, and usually we walk them together, but I took Guinness alone so he could set his own pace.

I would avoid over-medicating your dog with painkillers. That sounds cruel, but pain is his body warning him of potential further injury. Doctor and I had agreed on this line of therapy when we were trying to heal the injured ACL before he needed surgery, and we just followed through with it.

Guinness' wrap came off that week, he still wasn't putting a lot of weight on it yet. He left his staples alone, which doctor said he would by that time, and those came out the next week.

He limped for awhile, and favored the opposite leg for a month or two. At first I thought something had gone wrong, but again, he was just recuperating at his own pace.

That was back in October. Guinness shows no sign of the injury at all. We're back up to normal walks but I just don't feel comfortable letting him do his old running and jumping play, like chasing balls and frisbees, which caused the injury in the first place. I know he's frustrated, but I want to wait until summer before we start to play ball again. I'm being overprotective, but I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Hope this helps a little. I felt terrible and responsible somehow for his injury, but I kept reminding myself: I was putting him through this for his own good.

Good luck, and best wishes to your dog and many happy years to come!!!

41. I tried to nurse mine through it without surgery too.
Edited on Wed May-28-08 12:36 AM by Madrone
As a result, he's been injured and leading a substandard life since OCTOBER! It didn't help that I've had some health issues of my own and my vet never seemed to return my calls or follow through and I didn't have the energy to keep hounding him.

Anyway - the TPLO will be a much more severe (and expensive) surgery than the "fishing line" option - but I'm so afraid of the fishing line not working and having to go through this again - and Bodhi living a completely sedentary life for another YEAR. TPLO seems to have faster recovery (although still loooooooong and slow) and it's the first choice for owners of very active dogs - like mushers. After weighing all of the information and the time already wasted I decided on the TPLO. He's going to be operated on at a vet school at the state college.

Good idea about the crate. Probably won't be able to take it though - I have the little carsick dog that will absolutely be traveling by crate, and 2 cats, plus all their assorted "sick animal" gear, and my own crap, and animal food, litter boxes, etc, etc.... It's going to be a tight fit, and his crate is HUGE. It's not out of the question though, I'll have to see how everything packs together and it will likely be a last minute yay or nay decision as to whether I take it or not. It's really a huge nightma...ADVENTURE I'm embarking on. 4.5 hour (minimum) drive, 2 dogs (one that gets carsick) 2 cats with major health issues that I can't afford to board so must take with so they can continue to receive their care - with another cat, a bird, and 2 sugar gliders left at home with someone to check in each evening. NUTZ. I'll be gone about 4 nights.

As for Bodhi's breed - we're not sure. He was part of an abandoned litter of 10. Some of the puppies (I only saw 4) looked Newfoundland, one looked a little shepard after she grew up a bit. I didn't even WANT a dog - I had TOO MANY animals already! I can't imagine life without him now. He's AWESOME.

edit: how long before he got to join you in bed? It's going to be HARD not having him in bed with me, but thankfully I'm all on one floor.

69. I think Bodhi is one lucky pooch...
You obviously love all your animals very, very much. Hats off to you.

I wasn't given the option of the TPLO, but Guinness weighs fifty pounds tops, so maybe it wasn't appropriate.

I was lifting him up on to the bed within a few weeks. It's not the jumping UP, it's the impact coming DOWN, so we watched him like a hawk at night to make sure he would stay in bed. He isn't a night wanderer, but the wife would feed them in the morning and she had to make sure she was close at hand to lift him down (or wake me up to do it!) when she'd call the dogs to breakfast. But, he wasn't in the mood for athletics anyway, so it wasn't a problem. He'd wait for someone to lift him up or down whenever he wanted to change altitude, so to speak.

73. Awww. Thanks.
It's hard because I have a household of animals with health issues and I'm dealing with my own health issues that zap my energy and leave me unable to do and/or deal with *everything*. I DO manage to keep on top of the animals - at the expense of other things. But - I'm pretty hard on myself for not being able to do it ALL, and I'm angry with myself for Bodhi's knee having gone on SO LONG. Not entirely my fault, but I feel like I could have done much more.

Glad to know about bed. That will be the hardest thing for him. I trained him from a puppy to stay in bed ALL NIGHT without getting up, so that part will be easy - keeping him OUT of the bed for any period of time, not so much. I did buy the materials and have a guy at work fashion together a ramp for him not long after I learned what he'd done to himself. I used that on the couch and the bed for a long time. It will likely come in very handy for bed again after the surgery, and I plan on taking it with me to help him get in/out of the car after surgery.
