Stupidest. Product. Ever.
Okay, so I get that because of our society's stupid obsession with breasts as a sexual fixation, some women are uncomfortable using them for their primary function in public. I seem to recall we've discussed this on DU once or twice.

Well, some genius came up with some sort of blindingly bright apron thing to throw over, in order to protect people from the horrible fact that yes, human beings are in fact mammals. Except it doesn't really work, because it's some huge bright apron thing, not a cloaking device stolen from the Romulans. It's blindingly bright, doesn't appear to have any other conceivable use, and thus it's rather less discrete than just pulling one's shirt up (or using one of those special breastfeeding shirts, if you're so inclined) and feeding the kid. Rather, this thing is a big bright neon sign: PUBLIC BREASTFEEDING OVER HERE! ZOMG! BOOBIES!

Using one of these things just reinforces stupid societal notions that breasts are dirty and sexual, and that we must be protected at all costs from seeing them in use. In a sane world, where we cared more about the health of mothers and babies than about preserving our stupid hangups, mothers and babies would be celebrated, not hidden and shamed.

Ladies and Germs, I give you, the Hooter Hider. Yes, that's really it's name.

If there were an anti-woman hall of shame, I'd nominate whoever invented that eyesore.

2. She looks like she's getting attacked by a tacky umbrella
Not only does she look ridiculous, but how easy can it be to set that thing up using just one hand? The actual process of holding your infant in one arm and getting this thing out of your bag with one hand, unfolding it, then wrapping it around yourself seems like more trouble than it's worth.

8. Talk about misleading, that's a huge rack... what's it made out of, hopefully not vinyl?
I mean, if junior suffocates while drinking, that wouldn't be so good either...

I think the predominant worry is that if men see boobs, they might get aroused. Can't control nature, though men could control the "natural impulses"?

10. And she can't actually see her kid.
Which is both bad for the kid's development (they need eye contact) and potentially real traumatic to Mom's nips, if she doesn't get the kid latched on properly.

20. That was my thought exactly.
breast feeding has always struck me (in the third person, obviously) as being about far more than merely getting food into the infant.

15. I have an odd stamp from the middle east
of a woman fully covered, face and everything, except she has her breast out and is breastfeeding. It kinda surprised me. They just didn't see it as sexual, merely a natural function. And they put it on letters! And this was a place with morals police. I think they were trying to get more women to breastfeed by showing it as perfectly natural (and it's healthier for the infant). It was just weird.

But we have a sick society when something so natural and necessary is considered dirty and must be hidden. It ain't about sex, it's about nurturing and feeding your kid. And giving it the best start in life - breast milk helps restore the mother's immunities (which are lost not long after birth by the infant) and kickstart the kid's immune system.

Yes, a woman's breasts can be sexual, or comforting to nuzzle against, or feed babies. Context, people, context!

Khash.

21. they could at least make it out of something soft and subtle
I tell you anybody that needs THAT to discreetly feed their child in a public place just isn't doing it right.

I fed my daughter whenever and wherever I pleased w/o gimmicks and no one ever said a word to me. This was 1984/85 and a lot of this stuf just didn't exist. I was never asked to leave any public place in which I fed her.

I didn't even use the shirts w/ the velcro darts although many of my friends did.

27. I totally would have used one of those.
Seriously. I mean, that pattern is fugly, but I personally wasn't crazy about having my boobs out there when nursing in public. I tried receiving blankets but the kid and I didn't agree about the placement of said blankets (they were always getting ripped off at inopportune moments). Maybe I should be more liberated/more comfortable with my body, but I would have loved something like that.
