Anyone else interested in the remake of "The Andromeda Strain", tonight on
A&E?

I don't really like gory movies, but if this remake doesn't go too far, I think I'll watch it. You know what clinched it for me? That Andre Braugher (whom I know best from Homicide: Life on the Street) is in it...

Anyone else?

4. I think it's a miniseries, actually --
so they probably will repeat the first piece a few times during the week....

9. Does A & E ever show these again during the daytime?
I simply cannot watch TV after 9 pm without falling sound asleep and I'd like to see it. I remember the book very well.

7. I am blessed with a husband who cares not for sports on TV...
...and who is instead a big sci-fi geek, so no jesting here!

I like attending sports events, but on TV? Meh. Yawn. :boring: But I hope you enjoy your games! :hi:

15. sometimes remakes can be good -- you never know
Benjamin Bratt plays the main doctor character, Braugher is a general or something. Not sure. The first one was 1971, though, so it's been long enough for a remake to (maybe) bring something new to see. I just hope this one doesn't focus on close-ups of flesh-eating bacteria, or whatever. I'm interested in a sci-fi thriller, not a horror movie.

I'll be happy to keep that memory of it as the only version...

19. I watched it.
The bride and I thought it was outstanding. Interesting take on a SciFi classic. This one was much darker and paranoid-really an anti-homeland security/NSA/military message.

25. yeah - my husband joined me about halfway through, and
said "is this an anti-Homeland Security show or what?" - really showed a lot of venal, corrupt gov't officials, concerned with money and re-election more than anything else.

I thought it was interesting - glad part 2 is on tonight instead of next weekend....

26. I'm sure they're going to replay it often, at least through this week
check A&E's schedule where you are -- maybe you can Tivo it if you're at work when it's replayed.

I do wish Andre Braugher had a bigger part - he is just so fascinating to watch.

27. he's playing the journalist, right?
I thought he looked familiar, but couldn't place him (of course I could go to IMDB but I'm too lazy right now).

I don't know much about him - why don't you like him?

22. I liked it, am looking forward to part 2 on tonight
It's been years since I've read the book, so I can't really judge how accurate it was. However it was a pretty good show last night. Plenty of action and it looks like their setting it up to really spread beyond Utah.

24. I watched it too - it was pretty entertaining for Sci-Fi on the toob
I still think the Sci-Fi Channel did it best with the "new" Outer Limits hour long shows...

They were great.

28. I haven't read the book, and the first movie was out in 1971
when I was 2 years old - I don't think I've seen the original. Makes this probably a bit more interesting for me, since I don't have anything to compare it against.

29. Big fan of the book; the original film disappointed...
...I've read that damn book six times, probably-- first time at age 12, in the '70s. It's really well done. I think most of Crichton's later books are just blue-prints for the movies he obviously made a fortune from, but "Andromeda," and "The Terminal Man" are adventurous, really creative science-fiction novels, in my opinion. Obviously, the technology in this '60s novel is dated by today's standards, but Crichton did get at the increasing importance of computers (much like "2001"). "Andromeda" was truly cutting-edge in its time. The reason I still like the book is that it was conceived and executed as a book, not a movie. So the original movie, predictably, jettisoned all the small but crucial details that were great about the book. It was also poorly paced (unlike the book) and cast.

What I'd LOVE to see is a contemporary film that's set in the era of the original novel-- circa '67-68. I'd love to see someone try to get the book right. I'll watch the updated miniseries, but I've seen the previews and can't imagine they'll have much to do with what I initially admired, and still admire, about the book.
