I thought for sure my purse had been pickpocketed in a store on Via Garibaldi, a famed shopping district. There was no way it could have just fallen out. So I reported it to the Polizia, filled out a report. Luckily, my Tour Director who accompanied me gave them his cell phone number.
The call came 8 days later, when we were on our way to Venice. The wallet with all credit cards, my passport and both the Euros and Americand dollars I had in it had been turned in to the Turin police dept. and they had forwarded it to the U.S. Consulate office in Milan.
Of course, I had cancelled all of my credit cards. Since I had trip insurance I received a cash advance by courier and a replacement Visa card in 2 days time delivered to my hotel. So the rest of my trip was saved.
I had already been to the consulate office to get an emergency passport and would have gone back on the train to pick up the wallet but I didn't know about it until the evening before we left. I've emailed to consulate office asking them to send it to me at home in CT.
While I am still mystified as to how this could have happened, I am grateful to get the wallet back as it has my drivers license and my medical insurance card as well in it.
I just hope I'm not stopped by a cop before I get the license. I can just see how the officer would look at me if I said "I'm sorry, officer, my drivers license is on its way from the U.S. Consulate in Milan, Italy..."
