You know, holidays like this are even harder for me than Xmas and Thanksgiving
I feel like everyone in the world is off having a BBQ or rafting or camping or doing some sort of fun thing except for me. At least with Xmas and Thanksgiving I have my family (such as it is) and I can deal with it. I thought it was going to be really great to have the house to myself this weekend -- no kids, no roomies but really it's been very lonely and even though the weather is gorgeous I haven't left the house and feel all blah. I wish I knew how to be a normal person.

1. I know how you feel
I'm single, no kids, and I work 3rd shift. On holidays like this one I usually have no company aside from a 12 pack of beer. But I gave up drinking so now what have I got :)?

But I did get invited to a cook out this year. I'm not going to know everyone there, but it beats sitting here and getting blasted.

2. you up working the graveyard shift as well?
I'm a 3rd shifter too. I actually volunteered to work this weekend because it was better than sitting around feeling sorry for myself.

3. Not working right now. I just keep the same hours on my days off
Sort of anyway. My body has just become accustomed to sleeping when most people are awake.

4. I think that's best for overall health actually
the switching around is what makes 3rd shifters nuts. I try to keep a regular schedule too but it's nearly impossible when the kids are here.

5. Not us
This is not a holiday in Germany, so biz as usual here.

Plus my wife is a little down, since we just took our younger daughter
to Brussels on Friday to get her plane to Sierra Leone in West Africa,
and we haven't heard a word from her since. I'm sure she's OK, but it's
tough on a mother to see her baby (she's 23) off like that, and not know
if she got to where she was going alive. She's supposed to hook up with
the UN, as she is working with their war crimes tribunal down there this
summer, but until we hear that she did, my wife has all this images of her
being kidnapped and sold into slavery or something.

6. as a mom I can relate to her fears
 I'm sure she's fine. Hope you hear from her soon. And kudos to you for raising a daughter brave enough to do what she's doing.

7. Yeah, she's pretty fearless, alright
Now all we can do is hope that her fearlessness is justified.

16. Follow up:
Thanks for the sentiments. We finally heard from her. She hooked up with the
UN compound, and got us off an email that she is alive and looking for plumbing!

She and some people from 4 continents are going to risk a day at the beach, as
the rainy (as in malaria) season starts in 10 days.

This is going to one HELL of a "what I did this summer" report.......

12. I hope you hear from your daughter soon...
I can remember being that age and wondering why my mother worried so much. After all, I was just hitchhiking around the country.

10. I totally know what you feel...
Memorial Day and July 4 are real difficult for me because of the emphasis on the military aspects of the holidays. I will probably go to a movie some time today. I have to get out.

11. I have absolutely no fancy plans...and the kids are off doing
a parade thing for Sarah Roberts (D-County Commissioner). I think I'll read a book.

18. I went shopping. we have a tax free on Energy Star appliances
this weekend so I replaced our very ancient refrigerator and saved about $175 in sales tax on the deal, plus the unit itself was on sale.

I would have gone to a movie but it was hard dragging myself out to shop; I have a newly forming head cold and sore throat; if it hadn't been for the sales tax deal on the refrigerator I would have stayed home

20. I am excited about it, even with the cold.
our old one is like 32 years old. My H bought it several years before we got married and we just had our 25th this year.

It is Harvest Gold for crying out loud, that should tell you something right there LOL

I am even looking forward to cleaning out the old one and getting the space ready for it.

13. Sorry you feel so lonely today, Connonym. Hope you know you're not alone. You do have DU!
I think the idea of walking in a parade with one of your local "like-minded" politicians is a great idea. I've done it several times in the past few years and it always made me feel like I was doing important.

14. I'm working Memorial Day
I did opt to take the 4th of July off this year, though, after a customer told me on the last 4th of July, "Take you frequent flier card and shove it up your ass!"

Memorial Day is a time for reflection, anyway, to me. Yes, it is the beginning of summer & a time to celebrate the change in seasons. But for many years now, I've viewed it as a pretty solemn day.

15. Yeah, not even sure why I'm taking off work
except that well, I'm tired.

I have no plans, and I should be able to find enough to do without falling into a self pity thing

but I have been busy so far with my son, but he's gone now and the house is mine... as usual :hi:
