CONFESS!!! Who went to Gilley's after seein' Urban Cowboy?
.....I never did...I was too young...but this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine...eventhough it's *country music*....I wore my album soundtrack OUT doin' the two-step!!

This movie defines the REDNECKS and all that that entails....watched it again this weekend and wondered if anyone around here ever went to Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas....it was in the Guiness Book o'World Records for bein' the largest bar in the world...3.5 acres of BAR before it burned down in 1989!!

Oh and cousins...Mickey Gilley...Jerry Lee Lewis...and Jimmy Swaggart all grew up in a little town southeast of where I sit...Ferriday, Louisiana...and my Uncle went to high school with 'em!! :D

1. I was in Houston around 1984,
and we did the obligatory trip to Gilley's. It was an interesting place. I did not dance, nor ride the bull, but drank Lone Star beer (yeccch) and people-watched!!

4. Yes, it was enormous.
Edited on Wed Feb-18-04 02:48 PM by bunnyj
You could walk around inside it for days, it seemed. I'm not sure, but I think it had three stages, and a souvenir store?? Help me out someone, it was quite a while ago and I drank a lot back in those days! :)

Edit - I forgot about this: they would put a Gilley's bumper sticker on your car while you were inside the bar!

7. Now, now...as long as Lone Star is served ICE COLD and consumed quickly,
it makes a fine swill. Of course, when I started drinking at The Dixie Chicken in College Station, Lone Stars were 69 cents; everything else was a 99 cents. I wasn't a math major, but I figured I could get drunker, cheaper on Lone Star.

Aggie Republicans exempt, of course...

23. Nah...I think the name should have stayed the same.
I never understood why we have to have all these schools carry the name of the main campus. Who cares, as long as everyone knows which system they fall under? Oh well...

That movie should be turned into a Rocky Horror picture type of movie... It was seriously the hokiest movie ever made...

OH BUD!!! Ya bought us a trailer....

When Bud's aunt walked out to Bud shortly after his Uncle died and said, Bud, Yur Uncle wanted you to have this, and then handed Bud his Uncles belt buckle, I thought I was going to blow chunks out my nose....

17. Houston's light rail has had too many accidents....
Since its startup on 1/1/04. (Mostly SUV's doing illegal left turns--turns that were illegal on Main Street long before we had rail.)

Anyway, the City of Houston has a plan. They've hired a team of safety consultants to look into the matter. Consultants from Texas A&M. (No joke.)

---And, yes, I went to Gilley's. Went with a group of hippy weirdos to hear Willy Nelson.

20. Gilley's was in Pasadena, TX
Home of XXX Drive-In theatres and quite possibly the worst smelling place on earth. We referred to it as Stinkadena over by NASA.
