"America's next top model" winner is "Plus sized"
Remember when a "Plus sized" woman was a size 16? Then 14, then 12...now at 5' 10" and a size 10 this ANTM winner is considered "Plus sized":

1. I think she's beautiful
I was about that size when I was in college and always felt I was 'fat'

I wish we had more models that looked like her - Congrats Whitney!

4. I'm that size now and I consider myself
"curvaceous". I was a size 14 for a few month and thought of myself as "fat" then, but not so much now. I weighed 92 pounds for about a year (I'm 5' 8") and was a size 7. My doctor threatened me with hospitalization and forced feeding. Some of us were never meant to be a size zero.

more attractive generally speaking.

3. I agree a size 10 is not plus sized...
but if a woman with a real body can win a show like America's Top Model, it has to be a step in the right direction. My little cousins (ages 11 & 12) love that show so I'm glad they got exposed to something other than negative body image and eating disorders

16. And a 10 now is different from a 10 of 10 or 15 years ago.
"However, as a result of various cultural pressures, most notably vanity sizing, North American clothing sizes have drifted substantially away from this standard over time, and now have very little connection to it. Instead, they now follow the more loosely defined standards known as US catalog sizes. These are on average 6 sizes larger than the original standard. So, for example, a size 12 on the old standard would today be described as a size 6, while a size 6 on the old scale would be what is today known as size zero."

25.  I know that they've changed from the 50s-60s
but I don't think that sizes have changed terribly in the past 10 years. Marilyn Monroe was a size 16, and I can certainly believe that she would be a size 10 today. But my clothes from 10-15 years ago seem only slightly smaller than today's sizes.

32. I have a pair of size 4 shorts I bought in 1994 (God only knows why I hold on to them).
They are definitely smaller than today's size 0.

10. When the judges were debating which one to choose
size 0 Anya or size 10 Whitney, Tyra Banks said "Whitney is the girl that men would like to take to bed. Anya is the girl that designers would like to hang their clothes on" in the end they chose Whitney because of her professionalism during shoots. But, having been both very thin and larger over my life I can say that yes, most guys prefer "women built for comfort"! Too bad Madison Avenue will never see it the same way.

She's stunning. But size 10? I'm an 8/10 and I'm 5'4" and slender. WTF?

12. I think that everyone wears a size differently
Edited on Mon May-19-08 05:05 PM by Lorien
When I was a size 7 I was grotesquely anorexic. The largest point on my legs were my knees, and you could count every rib on my torso. But I remember standing next to Cindy Crawford at a party a few years later. She stood about three inches taller than me and was also a size seven-but she looked fantastic. Certainly not anorexic (her thighs were bigger than her knees). Crawford might be considered too big for a standard model today.

Recently size 0 Jennifer Love Hewitt was criticized for being "fat":

The suit isn't the best, but "fat"?

20. It's a quote from the TV show Firefly
something the rather male-piggish character Jayne said when he saw two attractive women together. And it was repeated a few times in that episode in jest by other characters. So now among geeks who liked that show, it's basically become a euphamism for, "That's hot." :P

26. She isn't in mine either.
I really hate that part of that show. I appreciate the Tyra does a lot to improve the self image of our young girls, but sometimes that show is the exact opposite of what she is trying to accomplish.

27. Most fashion models have to fit in a sample size 2 or 4.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 12:22 AM by Scooter24
That is the standard used by most big fashion houses that have shows on the major circuit.

However, most US-based designers will produce clothing for "plus-sized" and larger women but will still show with models size 2 or 4. Major Euro labels (like Versace, Balenciaga, Gucci, Chanel, D&G, and Dior) only produce their runway looks up to size 8, possibly 10 in some rare looks or pants.

I'm happy for this model winning, she'll have a good career ahead of her. It's just that her options are very limited given her size 10 figure.

28. Since when is size 10 plus sized?
I wear size 10 and while I could stand to lose 10 lbs, I am hardly plus sized. Even at my thinnest, I only wore size 4. That woman is not plus sized by any stretch of the imagination. She might be heavier than most of the size 0 models out there but she also looks a lot healthier than any of them.

30. Plus-size mannequins in department stores are size 10.
I used to do display for a couple different stores, and dressed mannequins as part of that job.

Putting plus-sized clothes on mannequins that size was ludicrous, and I had to do lots of work with pins up the back to make the clothes look like they fit.
